"Yes, Madam." They unconvincingly answered.

"Maddy, we need to go."

She looked so angry. It was unclear to me why she was upset, but I decided that we could talk about that later. She perhaps got angry at the culmination of things happening.

Within the next five minutes, we'd already left the compound with Dean and some guards. What fate awaited the love of my life in the hospital when I reached there?

I had no idea. All I had right now was hope.

Chapter seventeen

Maryam Carey's POV

IalwaysknewIhated hospitals, but being here reminded me how much I despised this place. Sure, it was one of the most important aspects of any society and a necessity of a building where you get to see miracles happen and help people.

But I saw it as a place with sick human beings at their worst. I didn't like that because their sadness tended to seep into me. I felt so bad for them that I began to feel bad myself. Now, though, it wasn't about me; it was about Maddy and how she felt. I needed to focus on keeping her stable and positive during this trying time.

Drew being here allowed me to rest. He talked with the receptionist while my focus remained on Maddy.

She was unusually static and didn't make a move, simply breathing slowly. I could feel the inward and outward movement of her chest while holding her close to me. Right now, she needed warmth, human connection, and support. Oh, I felt so sorry for this girl in her life. She'd witnessed so much pain and sorrow and now, some crazy-ass driver wanted to take more from her. That driver tried to take from me too, but I didn't want to focus on that. It would be better to focus on Maddy and how she handled things than recognize the burning turmoil inside me because that might cause me to break down. Right now, breaking down could not happen. I just couldn't let it. I must remain firm for Maddy.

"Are you cold?" I asked, and she shook her head. She had barely said a word since we left the house. I didn't want to pressure her because I knew we all regulated our emotions in different ways and we each found ways to cope in trying times. "Okay." I robbed my palm on her back. Hearing footsteps coming our way, I turned and saw Drew walking toward us.

"They said he was brought here in an ambulance and taken to the emergency room when he got here. He was unconscious but alive."

Even the word unconscious made my heart receive a jolt of potent pain. I squinted at that information.

My attention promptly went back to Maddy. While boring her fingers into her hair, her breathing got heavier, and I knew it would only be a matter of time before high emotions exploded in the wrong way… or maybe the right way. Who was I to know what constituted the right way?

"All we can do now is wait for the doctors to do their job. Everything will be fine, okay?" He held my hand, firmly shaking it, almost to jolt me into happiness. It didn't work, but I appreciated the effort and responded with a smile.

"Thanks, Drew, for everything."

"He's like a brother to me. There's no need to thank me. He would do the same for me."

Drew sighed, sitting down next to me as I held onto Maddy. I could tell he felt uneasy. His fingers shook and he couldn't keep eye contact with anyone or place. Drew kept looking around, a telltale sign that he was restless.

Not long after, a doctor came out, and we instantly looked at the secretary for confirmation that he was the one. The lady nodded, and we got up.

She just informed the doctor that we were Ron's family. The doctor faced us. Seeing a smile on his face made me less tense.

"So, Doctor, what's the problem? Is everything okay? Is he alive? Is he fine?" I bombarded him with inquiries.

Everything is fine. He is all right. His I.D. said he was Mr. Ronald Razor and besides, we knew his face from the numerous times he came here," the doctor explained. "He had some really bad injuries around his liver and the side of his head. One of the drivers in his car unfortunately didn't make it, but the other one is stable. The person that rammed into Mr. Razor's car is in a coma."

We don't care about that bastard.

Maddy moved closer to the Doctor. "Can we see him? You said he's okay, right?"

"He's alive, and he's breathing. Things are going well, but he is currently recovering. You can go home and come back, or we can give you a call-"

"No, no, I'm not leaving here," Maddy stressed.

"Okay. Okay, that's fine. You can stay and wait for him to wake up. He's currently sleeping and hasn't taken it in, yet. However, his vitals are stable. In a couple of hours or sooner, he should be awake."

"Thank you."

"It's my job, but you're welcome."
