“You won't believe this. They just called me and told me they would like to have an interview with you for a possible signing.”

“What do you mean, possible signing?”

“What the hell do you think?” Carmen typically had a diplomatic way of speaking, so for her to talk this freely, she must be hyped. “They are considering signing you as their next artist!”

“Wait. Aren’t they the ones involved with Frank Dover, that asshole singer?” I remembered reading vividly last week about how he acted on some issues. He'd been in a long run, and it surprised me RRR kept him around for that long. But going from Frank to me sounded unbelievable. This was a joke, right?

They probably wanted to sign me for something else or as a smaller singer, which I was fine with. Either way, this looked like a big opportunity for me, if true. Still didn’t sound real to me. The weird thing, though, was that Carmen wouldn't make up such a thing, so I trusted her. Nevertheless, why would they want someone like me? I'm just a YouTube singer. Well, I'd done very well on Spotify and YouTube, but still, is that enough to garner the attention of the likes of Ronald Razor?

“Yes, exactly. They've kicked Frank out. It just came out today.”

“Oh. Good choice then. Finally.”

“I know, right?” Carmen seconded.

I heard rumors that they were going to kick him out, so it came as no surprise. I didn't know what happened today. And they had already started calling for a replacement. Well, at the top, you must act fast I guess.

“I don't know if you're part of a short list or you're the only one. The point is, they're looking at you. That means I'm going to need you to put your best foot forward.”

I scoffed while smirking. “I always put my best foot forward.”

“Yeah, that is true. You're a sweetheart and that would help a lot in getting them to want to sign you, especially after the shenanigans they went through with Frank. They have other talented people who might interest them, but a lot of people who are talented in this industry don't have the sweetness that you do. Play to your strengths. I'll send you some of the details, like when the meeting will take place, th-”

“Wait, wait.” I tried to slow her down. Everything kept going so fast, no time to process what this could mean for me and my family. I'd be able to give them the life that I always wanted to and fulfill my dream of being a big-shot singer at the highest stage.

Thankfully, I knew a lot about Ronald Razor Records. They seemed like nice people compared to others. Being nice to your workers should be a given in a perfect world, sure. However, in Hollywood and the music industry, RRR might be the kindest one could be.

I didn't know much about their CEO, though. Only that he looked handsome and had a lot of charisma. That being said, I also heard rumors of his arrogance. It came from Twitter and salacious tabloids, so yeah, hard to take that seriously.

“What would you want me to wait for? Aren't you excited? This is what you’ve been waiting for all your life,” Carmen rambled on.

“Yes, yes, I know, but I just need to process it all.”

“I understand. I'll still send you the stuff but take some time to go through it and get back to me today.”

“Alright, thanks, Carmen.”

“Today,” she emphasized.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got you.”

After the call ended, I remained in a daze. What just happened? I got an offer from RRR? How? Why? What did they see in me? I didn’t even know they were watching me. Oh, wait. It wasn’t an offer yet, just an invitation to meet them and talk. They probably wanted to vet me in person, seeing my mannerisms and character. That seemed fair. Worse music labels existed that I could work for, so this came as a win.

I quickly got up as the excitement started swelling inside me. This could change my life and change my parents’ lives. They’d worked so hard to give me a good life, and I only wished to pay them for it. Ma wanted me to marry, but I wasn’t thinking about that right now. All my head focused on was work so that I could provide not just for me, but for them. They deserved it. I felt I had done a good deal after earning Spotify revenue and YouTube AdSense, but it could be better. Dad always wanted to live in a particular kind of house. He talked about those sustainable, free-space kind of places, maybe overlooking a waterfall or a nice backdrop. He always said it jokingly, but I listened, and I knew he’d like something as cool as that but had resigned himself to be content with what he managed to achieve.

“Oh, my God.” I knew getting excited before anything had been finalized came as a recipe for disaster, but it became harder and harder to withhold my happiness. I considered calling my parents but decided against it. Better to tell them if I get signed. Thinking about it some more, I should have asked Carmen if RRR contacted her through an A&R rep. Since they’re just like agents, but for the label, it might not be as big as I thought. But if it came from the top, then I’d have more reason to be confident.

“Ugh! Why am I letting this consume me?” I yelled, groaning in frustration after. If this all worked out, I might need to upgrade Carmen from my agent to my manager. My phone pinged, and I rushed it like it was a box of chicken nuggets and I’d been starving for a day.

The email Carmen promised to send had arrived, and I rummaged through every piece of it with intent. The more I read and re-read, the more I understood the process. I heard that signing an artist could be difficult and time-consuming due to the necessity of adhering to tight regulations, which call for an in-depth understanding of the sector. A seasoned and recognized management, label, and promotion firm could be a wonderful place to start for people who need such a service. More reason for me to grasp everything they were saying in the letter.

It wasn’t an audition, instead, we would simply meet them and discuss. For now, I needed to be ready to meet them. This could be the one interaction that could change my life forever. After several years of working toward this goal, and now, it stared me in the face.Who is Ronald Razor?I asked myself. I would soon find out.

Chapter three

Ronald Razor’s POV

I couldn’t stop thinking about her, and that annoyed me to no end. Why did this girl in particular strike a chord in me? Hearing her sing took me to another level I didn’t know I could ever reach from listening to another person’s voice. The way she played multiple instruments, such as the violin and xylophone, wouldn’t translate to commercial success, but it gave her a sense of authenticity.
