“Yes,” she replies almost before I finish my question.

“Well, that's good, but I have to go through them with you.” I round my table and take a seat, leaning back on the recliner.

“Right now?”

I shrug. “Do you have anything better to do?”

“It's lunchtime.” She glances at her watch.

I steal a quick glance at mine. “Lunchtime is literally almost over, and you don't see me going out for lunch, do you? You seem to forget what your job really is.”

She drags her feet out of my office and returns shortly with her tablet, and she hands it to me, her forehead wrinkled in a frown.

If she doesn't like it, she can always leave.

As I watch her talk, I’m reminded of the lushness of her lips and how they felt against mine.

How she screamed, and how every time I took her, her fingers dug into my skin.

She tucks a mass of hair behind her ears, revealing a flawless porcelain complexion. The gentle curve of her cheekbones adds a soft elegance to her features.

This is indeed going to be harder than I thought.

Despite being overworked the entire day, somehow, she still manages to look flawless.

The only thing that might need a little bit of change would be her choice of outfits, especially the fabrics.

She needs some good designers in her wardrobe. Then, she might just be the prettiest woman at Oak.

I hit my forehead to redirect my thinking, focusing on the present situation.

“Are you okay?” she asks. I don’t detect a single form of concern in the tone of her voice.

I look up at her.

“You look beautiful today,” I say the words before I can stop myself.

As our eyes meet in an unspoken embrace, time seems to stand still. In that fleeting instant, the world around us fades into insignificance.

My gaze, intense and searching, meets hers, which holds a glimmer of curiosity and vulnerability.

In that shared silence, a thousand unspoken words pass between us.

Carissa blinks repeatedly before regaining her composure.

“Thank you,” she forces a smile.

“Please, continue.”

Chapter five

CARISSA

By the time my alarm goes off at 5:00 a.m., I’m already up.

I toss and turn in bed, physically and mentally preparing myself for the day that lays ahead of me.

I groan and press my pillow against my face, just enough for effect but not enough to strangle myself.
