I’ve barely had four hours of sleep.

Every time I try to close my eyes, explicit images of Jayden flash into my memory not withholding the little staring competition we had yesterday after he calls me beautiful.

Then, just like a reminder, images of bossy Jayden take over to keep me in check.

I still can’t understand why Jayden suddenly decided to treat me like this.

It would make more sense if we’d never met before, but right now Jayden is either simply cruel and maintaining his true self, or something else that I can’t think of.

What worries me the most is why I always seem to think there really might be something else to him and that Jayden can’t really be like this.

That benefit of doubt.

The girls at the office often make sly comments whenever his name comes up, but they will not fully give me details.

Why is everyone so scared of him?

The same Jayden who came limping after me asking for a ride a couple of days back?

I hurry out of bed as soon as the clock strikes 6:00.

I can’t let him beat me to it again.

Only God knows what load of work I’ll have to deal with today.

My days at Oak have become predictable.

Although I dread it, I need the job, so I have no choice for now but to take my daily tasks head on.

I hurry through my bath and get dressed.

When I step out into the early morning Nevada air, I feel a lot better.

In the taxi, I quickly send Jayden an email to update him on his 7:00 a.m. gym session before work and scan through the rest of his activities just in case he asks me out of the blue.

I hum to the unfamiliar tune playing in the taxi.

Jayden can bring it on, and he’d better make it his best shot.

I’ll be putting in my best as always and maintaining positivity while I’m at it.

Lydia, Claire, and Jesse are a little surprised that I stopped by to get them smoothies on my way to the office.

“What is this about?” Claire teases, already halfway done with her drink.

“Just a gesture,” I respond with a smile. “I feel a little too happy today,”

“Well, I hope that happiness lasts through the day,” Lydia says. “Thank you for the gesture.”

“You are welcome.”

“So, what’s the tea with the boss?” Lydia leans over and asks in a whisper. “I see he’s already bossing you around. I fear that you won’t last through this.”

“You seem to forget this is how he is,” Claire jumps to my defense. “Have you forgotten so fast what the other assistants had to go through?”

“It wasn’t as bad as what Carissa’s putting up with,” Lydia argues further. “Lunch break too? I mean, that’s low.”

Listening to the others talk about Jayden kind of dampens my spirit a little bit, but I fight to keep it up.
