Back at his office, Jayden leans against his desk, his gaze fixed on his laptop displaying a mountain of unfinished work.

I stand across from him, my weary eyes feeling the strain of long hours and sleepless nights.

“Carissa,” Jayden calls, his tone curt and impersonal, “you need to keep up if you want to keep this job.”

I raise my brows in confusion.

To the best of my knowledge, I've been putting in the work–even more than necessary.

Is he trying to fire me?

My heart sinks as I try to conceal my thoughts. I’m more than tempted to ask him to point out how I haven’t been keeping up.

“I’ve noticed a few mistakes on the drafts you helped Pamela with,” he continues as if he was reading my mind, “and just overall, I don't think you’re catching on as fast as I expect.”

Every part of me wants to protest and defend myself, but instead I say, “I’m sorry, sir. I’ll work harder and be more careful to avoid mistakes in the future.”

“You’d better. This company expects only top-notch performance from its employees,” he replies, eyes glued to his laptop.

“Pick up the list of emails in front of you. I want those done in the next hour, then report back to me.”

I pick up the piece of paper, making as much sound as possible so he knows I’m still standing in front of him.

He raises his head to look at me, and I look away.

I can’t afford to hold his gaze right now.

“You may leave.”

I take a moment in the restroom to calm my nerves.

I almost asked him if it was because we had sex that he has been treating me so cruelly–because I’ve seen every inch of his naked body.

I literally had to bite my tongue to avoid letting it slip out.

Maybe then he would have his reason to finally fire me.

I exhale deeply. I will not give him the satisfaction.

If this is war, how about we see it to the end?

I walk back to my desk and begin writing the emails, typing away on the computer provided for me.

I look over to his office, and I can swear I see him lurking, except the typical Jayden would never.

Everyone else seems to be happy working here, especially Pamela.

She even has time to do her manicure right at her desk.

I groan. Why does everything about me have to be so difficult?

Chapter six

JAYDEN

It’s a new day.

The atmosphere in the office is abuzz with the usual sounds of ringing phones, clicking keyboards, and the hum of activity.
