I’ve decided that a change is in order.

My previous assistants have always occupied a desk situated in the corner of the office, a location that afforded them a degree of autonomy and privacy.

However, I feel it’s time for a change.

This is why even though I arrived at the office before Carissa I won’t bother to burden her with that today.

She has far more pressing issues to get used to now, like her desk being relocated to a prime spot just outside my office door.

I can already hear the others whispering curiously as they arrive at work to the new change.

But it’s Carissa’s arrival that I anticipate the most.

When she eventually arrives, there’s a knock on my door before she lets herself into my office before I can even summon her.

Surely, she’s surprised and will demand an explanation for this change.

“Morning, Carissa,” I say with a friendly yet mysterious smile. “I’m sure you’re wondering what happened to your desk.”

“Yes, I am,” she responds with a nod and a hint of curiosity in her eyes.

“Forgive me for not informing you beforehand, but I didn’t want to interrupt your life outside of here. You already have so much to do here in the office.”

I adjust in my chair and brace myself for whatever her reaction may be.

“I thought about it, and this is just a way to improve communication between us. It’ll allow for faster response times and a more seamless collaboration,” I continue as she listens attentively. “I just want to be able to guide you more effectively, as it seems like you’re getting too distracted back there,”

“Okay,” Carissa responds in a tone that implies she is unimpressed.

“It’s good to remember that positive outcomes can arise from embracing change in the workplace,” I say after a brief moment of silence. “In this case, it just happens to be a simple rearrangement of office furniture.” I smile but she won’t return it.

She only manages to look me in the eyes for a brief moment before she looks away again.

“Alright, that should be all.”

I’m intrigued to peel her open, layer by layer like an onion.

Despite her reservations to the way I’ve treated her over the past days, she’s remained professional and committed to her role.

Perhaps this close proximity will help her realize that she has to adapt to my working style, which is not only demanding, but intense.

It will also give me an opportunity to observe her closer and see how best I can take advantage of this situation we have found ourselves in.

Since she won’t give up, she will definitely give in somehow–again.

If I can’t get rid of her, what’s the point of trying so hard?

I’ll just put my principles aside and allow fate to take its course.

I smile at the thought.

It wouldn’t kill me to find myself buried inside her once again. On the bright side, I get to have my cake and eat it too.

Never in the history of mankind has that hurt anyone.

As the day progresses, Carissa makes several rounds into my office. It’s easier to get her attention now, and she shows up faster too.

“Do I have anything else planned for today?” I ask as she flicks her fingers, scrolling through the tablet in her hand.
