The days fade away slowly, and on the second day, I decide to go see her.

Perhaps she will realize I’m not such a bad guy after all and that I genuinely care about her.

As the sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows across the city, I rush through the bustling streets to the hospital.

Surprisingly, the thought of seeing Carissa after work today fills me with some kind of anxiety. I glance at the bouquet of roses sitting in the passenger seat, hoping that will leave a smile on her face.

The city lights twinkle as I make my way through the maze of buildings and traffic.

Each passing moment feels like an eternity.

I’m still unable to reach her over the phone, so I’m hoping it’s not a serious ailment that has landed her in the hospital.

As I enter the hospital’s sterile, well-lit lobby, clutching the large bouquet of roses, I begin to feel nauseous and hope I don't have an allergic reaction to something.

A nurse points me to her room and I follow the signs.

I pause for a moment, taking a deep breath to steady myself before gently pushing the door open.

Carissa lay in the hospital bed, her face pale but for a bright pink color flush on her cheeks when she sees me.

Her hair, once a jet-black wave of freedom, is now tied back in a loose bun. Needles penetrate one hand while the other is free.

“Jayden,” she whispers, her voice fragile but full of warmth.

I approach her bedside and place the bouquet on her lap.

“I tried to reach you. What happened?”

“I can't use my phone,” she replies, caressing the bouquet of flowers. “I had some sort of food poisoning. I ate something bad.”

“You need to be more careful, Carissa. What if something bad had happened to you?”

She pulls out the card from the bouquet and reads it silently.

“What are you doing here?”

“What do you mean?”

“You should be at a meeting today, yeah?” Her eyes watch me as if she just caught me doing something bad.

“Yes, but I still had to come to see you,” I answer, taking her hand. “The meeting can wait.”

Then it hit me. “So, you still know my schedule, even while at the hospital?”

“You didn't make me work overtime for nothing, did you?” She laughs, a short, dry laughter.

I don't know for certain if it’s now safe to say Carissa is probably the most hard-working woman I have ever met.

“You are just something else.”

As I watch her smiling back at me from her sick bed, I can’t help but admire her entire essence.

“What if I say I want this to be official? You and me?” The words leave my mouth before I have the chance to think about it, and even then, I don't regret saying it.

Carissa sighs. She doesn't seem surprised at all.

“You don't make decisions like that in a hurry, Jayden.”
