Most of the other women I have been with would give anything to hear those words come out of my mouth.

I never even thought I was ever going to say that to anyone one day, whether as a guise or if it were to be my true intentions.

I don't even know if I mean it.

The most important thing right now is that Carissa got those words to come out of my mouth.

“Why not? We have good chemistry, or at least we have good sexual chemistry.” I try to sound convincing. “You won't have to work a day in your life ever again. We can just be happy.”

Carissa laughs so hard I don’t realize she actually starts sobbing until she puts her hands over her face.

“Hey…”

I just sit there, unsure of what to do as the sobbing intensifies and slowly dies down.

Chapter fifteen

CARISSA

My eyes grow wide in shock to see Jayden show up at the hospital.

Even if we have been close lately, I don't expect much from him.

I mean, I don't expect anything at all.

While he sits next to me and shows this sweet side of himself as opposed to the man I first knew, I’m torn between which one is the real him.

And when he said the words about ‘making it official,’ I didn’t mean to burst into tears.

He doesn’t know what that means, does he?

Not having to work a single day in my life seems like quite the catch, but is that really why he thinks I would want to be with someone?

I was right about him all along.

“Jayden, you don't even have experience with being a boyfriend. How do you think that will work?” I ask as soon as the tears dry from my eyes.

“You need experience for that?” he asks with an engaged look and raised eyebrows.

I sigh. “Jayden, the night you met me, I was at the club because I had just been left in a traumatic situation.” I try to be as calm as possible as I share this part of me with him.

I never thought I would have to.

“I was about to get married, but it didn't happen.”

“Why?” he asks, his grip growing tighter around my palm.

“Because he didn't show up.” My voice shakes from the weight of the words I had only carried in my heart but now have to talk about.

“He developed cold feet and decided he didn't want to be married to me after all.”

My eyes glisten with tears that I fight back. “Cold feet,” I scoff. “That’s all it takes sometimes. You think you want to be with someone until you don't.”

Jayden is quiet.

I can barely tell from the look on his face if he feels pity for me or if he’s indifferent.

I know he’s taking everything I say in, so I let him, giving him enough room to gather his thoughts.
