I force a smile. “Pretty much.”

They squeal in excitement. “Let’s go!”

I walk around the car, inspecting the tires. They’ve been slashed.

Damn, not right now!

I look up at the excited girls trying to come up with a good way to break the news, but they’re too eager to get in to even look at me.

“Come on,” they call again, shooting me an impatient look.

“Girls, I’m sorry. We have to take an Uber.” I pull out my phone to avoid looking at them. I’ve never been more embarrassed in my life.

“What?”

“My tires, someone slashed them…” I try to explain but the blonde one hisses.

“He’s a bum. Let’s go,” she says spitefully, dragging the other one with her.

“What a waste of time.”

“Hey, come on,” I call, but they don’t turn back.

Shit!

I kick my car but end up feeling the pain right after.

It feels like God is punishing me for something. But what could that be?

And how the hell do I get home now? I tap on my phone and realize the signal is completely down.

This is it. I’m not making it out of this embarrassment.

I walk over and sit by the stairs, hoping for a miracle and thinking of the next logical thing to do while I tap my feet and watch the people troop in and out.

Then it hits me.

I must be getting punished for what happened earlier with the strange karaoke lady.

I sigh and tighten my grip on my phone.

Whoever slashed my tires is damn lucky I didn't see them. My night couldn't be any worse.

I hear the sound of her shoes hitting the pavement before I see her face. She’s walking out of the club as though in a hurry. Her hair is flying in the air as the cold night breeze brushes past her, revealing her face.

Covered in shame, I hurry toward her.

“Caresha,” I call out, weaving through everyone in my path to get to her.

I have to call twice before she turns and eventually stops.

“Caresha? Who’s that?” she asks, sizing me up when I finally get to her.

“You told me that was your name a few moments back, remember? Jayden?” I try to sound cool.

She scoffs and continues walking while I limp after her. “Hey, wait!”

“It’s Carissa, asshole,” she replies from a distance and opens her car door.
