I watched him sleep twice at the hospital, my heart pounding like a distant drumbeat. Those were some of the longest nights I have had.

Jayden lay there, his chest rising and falling in a rhythmic cadence. I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of intimacy.

The hint of a smile played on his lips, even in slumber, as he shifted slightly, curling into a more comfortable position.

I longed to reach out and caress his cheek, but the thought of waking him held me back. I wanted to enjoy the moments when I got to see him so vulnerable, and I wanted it to last.

“Hey, Carissa,” Lydia’s voice snaps me back to reality.

I turn to look at her, slightly lost.

She raises a brow. “The phone has been ringing.”

My eyes follow the gesture of her perfectly manicured hands to the phone.

I didn't realize I had been so deep in my own thoughts that the shrill and unmistakable sound of a phone ringing persistently couldn’t shake me to attention.

I nod my thanks to Lydia and pick up the receiver.

“Jayden’s office, Carissa speaking. How can I assist you today?”

“Hi, Carissa,” the female voice on the other end responds drowsily. “This is Emily. I was wondering if I could speak with Jayden. It’s been a while, and I would really like to catch up.”

Well, it's not every day Jayden gets a call from a girl to catch up on his work phone. I roll my eyes.

“Hi, Emily. I’ll have to check his schedule. May I ask what this is regarding?”

She gives an impatient sigh before she responds, “It's personal, really.”

“Okay. Let me see if Jayden is available at the moment. Please hold.”

I put her on hold and call Jayden’s office.

“You know you can just walk right into my office, right?” he says as soon as he picks up on the second ring.

I don't know why that sounds romantic to me, but I suppress my smile. I have to keep it professional.

“Yes, but I am afraid you have a call on hold from someone named Emily. Should I put her on?”

A pause follows before he answers, “I don't know anyone by that name. Is this work-related?”

“She wants to catch up,” I reply.

And she couldn't call your phone, I add in my head.

“I’m busy. I’ll only be taking work calls,” he says.

“Okay.”

By the time I get back to Emily, she is already fuming.

“How long does it take to check in with your boss?” she howls. “Do you have any idea who I am?”

One of his hoes?

“Emily, Jayden is unavailable at the moment. Would you like to leave a message for him?”

The voice on the other end is no longer drowsy but hysterical.
