But with this new bet with Jack, I have to speed it up–and leave her.

Now that part, I can’t deny, might be a little bit hard, but it’s never impossible, especially when it comes to me.

He went too far with that part though.

“Okay, can we talk about something different now?” Troy says in an attempt to change the subject.

“Of course,” Jack replies, shooting me a wicked grin.

Oh, he has no idea that he’s about to lose this one. This is too easy.

Regardless, it looks as though I’ll be the subject for some good-natured ribbing for a while.

Chapter nineteen

CARISSA

With each passing day, I enter the office with a mix of anticipation and trepidation, uncertain of what extravagant gift might await me from Jayden.

The sight of my desk has become a source of both excitement and anxiety, as it has transformed into a place where surprises, both delightful and perplexing, appear almost daily.

As I approach my desk each morning, my heart races, wondering what Jayden has in store for me that day.

Will it be another exquisite bouquet of roses, a lavish spa day voucher, or perhaps a high-end piece of jewelry? I never know.

The uncertainty weighs on me as the gifts begin to symbolize not only friendship but also the increasing complexity of my relationship with Jayden.

My colleagues have already become super curious, and it won’t be long before they put two and two together and figure it out.

Whispers and chuckles fill the air, and they often tease me about this gift-giving spree.

Claire already said, “Well, we must know this man who is this intentional about you. You should introduce him to us soon.”

And the others nodded in agreement.

Now, how do I introduce them to their boss?

Jayden’s gestures have turned into a spectacle that’s hard to ignore.

My fear isn't about the gifts themselves, but rather the underlying ambiguity of Jayden’s intentions.

I fear that accepting these gifts might create an awkward power dynamic and lead to rumors among my co-workers.

Today, as I approach my desk, I already anticipate one of these gestures, hoping he has left nothing to expose that he is responsible for the gifts.

I find a small box with an elegant ribbon.

My hands tremble, and my anxiety peaks as I open the box to reveal a diamond bracelet, far beyond what I’m comfortable accepting.

I stare at the beautiful piece, tempted to accept it like the many others.

“Oh my God! He must really love you.” Claire gasps from behind me, hands on her heaving bosom. I didn't realize she had crept up behind me to peer.

I shut the box immediately and give her a forced smile.

She has become a little too close and nosy since all of this started. It makes me wonder–what does she know?

“I would be over the moon if someone treated me like this,” she continues. “You’re such a killjoy. You need to tell us what’s going on.”
