I chuckle lightly, hoping she will go away. “I honestly wish I knew.”

“When you’re ready to spill the tea, you know where to find me,” she whispers and giggles before walking away.

At this point, I know I need to address this situation with Jayden and express my concerns before it spirals further.

I need to know what all these gifts mean and what he intends to achieve with them.

We’ve been good friends ever since we hit it off a second time even if I had let him down slowly.

Perhaps he didn't get the hint?

Maybe I wasn’t clear enough?

While I silently enjoy the attention I’m getting from him, I’m hoping there’s nothing more to it and it doesn't ruin our professional relationship.

If word gets out, I’m at a huge risk, and Jayden being Jayden will be untouched.

After all, he owns the company. So, better to get rid of the distraction–me.

I tap my feet underneath my desk, unable to focus on my tasks as I await his arrival, thinking of the best possible way to talk to him about it without sounding disrespectful or hurting his feelings.

By the time Jayden shows up, I’m still a bit tense and haven’t completely made out the conversation in my head. He winks at me before proceeding into his office, and I look around to make sure nobody saw.

When my eyes meet Pamela’s, she’s looking at me a little too intensely as she files her nails. I hold her gaze until I can’t any longer and look away.

This is becoming too much for me.

I pull my hair away from my face uncomfortably as I can still feel her eyes digging into my back as I pick up my tablet and head into Jayden’s office.

“Good morning,” he greets me with a smile before I can.

“Good morning, Jayden,” I respond and clumsily fiddle with my tablet. “You arrived late today, and you missed your meeting at 9:00 a.m.”

“Oh,” he puts his right palm across his face. “I just had other engagements.”

Like picking out a diamond bracelet for me?

“That's alright. I moved it to later this evening. An hour before you leave, precisely,” I answer.

“You’re a gem.” He snaps his fingers and scampers through a few sheets of paper lying on his table. “Is that everything?” he asks as I just stand there thinking about whether I should bring up the conversation.

“Uhm, no,” I stammer. “There is an update on the SunRise project, but Jesse is in a better position to fill you in.”

“Why?” he asks, looking up at me.

“You put him in charge of that. Remember?”

“Let him fill you in, and then you can come back and fill me in,” he replies, typing away on his computer. “Better you than him.”

I nod, still battling with my decision.

“The bracelet,” he says without looking up at me, “did you like it? Or would you have preferred something else?”

“I like it,” I respond, completely caught off guard.

“Thank God,” he says, shooting me a smile. “I went through a lot of trouble trying to make sure you would like it.”

“But why?” I ask, making good use of this window of opportunity.
