“I’m sure I’m talking to humans and not robots.”

“Carissa was just being rude to me about work,” Pamela finally says. My eyes grow wide in shock as Jayden looks at me.

“No, I wasn't,” I argue. “You’re the one being rude and giving me your tasks to do instead of actually doing your job.”

“You two, my office.”

We follow Jayden into his office, Pamela leading the way.

Once inside, I maintain a reasonable distance away from her, unsure of what she plans to do next.

“You do realize this is a workplace, right?” Jayden says, standing and leaning toward us, hands on his table.

“Yes,” we chorus, Pamela’s voice coming a little later than mine after she takes a long breath.

“And what is this I hear about you giving your tasks to Carissa?”

She clears her throat. “Sir, it was just this one time…”

Bloody liar.

“No, it wasn’t,” I protest. “You’ve been doing it for weeks, and even so, very rudely.”

“I don't recall being rude to you,” she says, eyeing me. “If anything, you were the rude one this morning.”

“Enough of that!”

The look in Jayden’s eyes gives away his struggle to handle the situation amicably without favoring either party.

“Henceforth, Carissa will not be doing any tasks I have not authorized her to do,” he continues. “She works for me. Not you.”

“Okay, sir,” Pamela nods.

“If you both can’t coexist in the office, I suggest that you keep your distance,” he says sternly to no one in particular.

“Next time I hear something like this again, someone might just be getting fired.”

As I walk back to my desk with Pamela dragging her feet behind me, a smile of victory curves my lips.

Although Jayden did his best to not show favoritism, it’s clear that I won this round with Pamela, hands down.

I steal a glance at her as I sit. Her face has almost turned bright red from the fury she must be feeling inside. Serves her right.

Whatever her issues are with me, she can take them up with Jayden.

As for me, I’ll do my best to keep a safe distance away from her.

My eyes dart to Jesse’s desk, and our eyes meet. He gives me an inquisitive brow raise, and I nod in the affirmative. He nods back and resumes typing on his computer.

I exhale deeply and get back to work.

Chapter twenty-two

JAYDEN

Istand before my full-length mirror, admiring my reflection as I contemplate what to wear.

Carefully selecting from my collection of shirts, I choose a deep navy-striped shirt. The fabric is soft to the touch, hence my choice.
