How dare he not hurt as much as he has hurt me?

Although I feel as though the anger will rip through me, I do my best to keep my composure, moving from hip to hip and occasionally taking a strand of hair off my face.

“What’s my schedule?” he finally asks, breaking the silence.

“I emailed it to you as soon as I realized I would be running late,” I respond, eager to leave.

“I want you to read them out to me,” he says.

I hesitate for a moment.

Why can't he just open the damn email and read his own schedule?

“One second.” I walk back out to my desk to retrieve my tablet and return to his office.

As soon as I walk in, he closes his laptop and looks up at me. His gaze causes my hands to shake as I scroll through my tablet to find his schedule.

“It’s your nieces’ birthday today. The twins.” I say without looking away from my tablet.

“Send them some flowers and see if you can find anything girls their age might like,” he replies offhandedly.

Typical Jayden, throwing money around.

How about something thoughtful?

“Okay. You have a meeting in thirty minutes,” I continue.

“Do I have to be there? Isn't it something you or Pamela can handle?” he asks.

“No. It's the clients from New York, and I believe they will be here anytime now,” I respond, almost rolling my eyes, “After that, you have the Jacobs fundraising dinner for his wife’s foundation at seven.”

“Okay.” He leans back. “Thank you, Carissa. And please try not to be late very often. It's a busy time at the office.”

“Yes, sir.”

As I walk away, I can feel my hand threatening to punch the wall.

Jayden will not make me miserable while he goes about acting as if nothing happened. He will pay for it.

Chapter twenty-six

JAYDEN

Iwatch from the atrium of the large ballroom as guests arrive, anticipation buzzing in the air.

The company, with the help of the members of my board, has organized an exclusive event for its esteemed clientele.

It was a last-minute decision, but the turnout has been great, and everyone has put their hand on deck to make this event a great experience for our clients.

I must commend Carissa. She helped the event planners to give the room a tasteful furnishing.

The ballroom of the opulent Dartmouth Tower is adorned with modern sophistication. It has been transformed into a captivating fusion of sleek modernity and refined elegance, mirroring the most of Carissa’s essence.

She had put her all into it. Perhaps it’s her way of trying to get over the incident that has now kept us away from each other. I had decided not to try and beg more because of my ego, but I managed to convince myself that it’s because I want her to be calmer before I talk to her.

But her anger is taking longer than expected to go away.

I understand the gravity of what I have done, but if she would just hear me out, she would find that it didn't exactly happen the way she thinks it did.
