I continue with my task as I await Jayden’s arrival and dread it at the same time. It is so hard to see him every day after this roller coaster of emotions he has put me through.

As soon as Jayden walks in, the aura in the office is different. Everybody does their best to be seen and heard. I look up at him and hold his gaze as he walks past me into his office. I count thirty seconds before picking up my tablet and going in after him.

“Good morning, sir,” I force the words out of my mouth.

He rolls up his sleeves and opens his laptop, not taking his eyes off me.

“I liked it better when you called me by my name.”

I blink repeatedly and look away, holding onto my tablet so that it doesn’t fall out of my grip.

“Can you sit for a second, please?”

“Yes, sir.” I raise a brow and take a seat.

“Please, stop with the sir,” he pleads.

“But you are my boss,” I respond, feigning ignorance.

He exhales heavily and puts both hands over his face. “Carissa, please. I’m really sorry I hurt you. But haven't you made me suffer enough? Will I pay for it for the rest of my life?”

“Now that you are bringing our personal issues into the workplace, can I just say that I don't like your flowers and all of that? Please, stop. It’s becoming embarrassing,” I say, maintaining eye contact.

“I have told you. I won't stop until you forgive me.”

“If you keep harassing me, I will quit,” I simply say.

The words hit him as his mouth opens in surprise, slowly curves into a smile, and then he releases a mocking laughter.

“Did I say something funny?”

“Don’t threaten me, Carissa. Don't make me suffer any longer.” The words sound like an order rather than a plea. “I won't let you go.”

“Why? So that you can keep hurting me?”

A quick knock followed by Pamela’s entrance puts the conversation on hold as I struggle to maintain composure.

“Pamela, how can I help you?”

“Sir, the manager in charge of the building in Los Angeles says he has been trying to reach you. Apparently, they need to import something, but he won't speak to me. He wants to speak to you directly,” she replies.

I wasn’t aware that they had started building the Los Angeles branch. Pamela does have some leverage after all, and perhaps not being close to Jayden anymore has made that possible.

“Why does he think he calls the shots?” Jayden replies. “Have him call my assistant. He can say whatever he wants to say to her.”

Pamela hesitates as she steals a glance at me.

“Did you hear me?” Jayden asks.

“Yes,” she nods and walks out of the office.

Jayden turns to me once again. “Carissa…”

I hurry to stand from the chair. “I have work to do, sir. Can I read out your schedule for today?”

My eyes flutter open as the first ray of dawn gently filters through my curtains. I had been dreaming about things that I should not be dreaming about. Jayden, for example.

I lay there, momentarily suspended between the realms of sleep and wakefulness, my mind lingering on the dream that has wrapped itself around my subconscious–a montage of moments that felt vivid. It almost felt real.
