A soft sigh escapes my lips as the remnant of the dream lingers, a bittersweet aftertaste of emotions woven into the fabric of my slumber. It had been a whirlwind of stolen glances, laughter, and moments where I could feel his skin on mine and even smell him.

A faint smile curves on my lips, a reflection of the sweetness the dream had left behind.

As the tendrils of sleep release their grasp, reality gently seeps in, and I realize the dream was nothing but a temporary escape, reminding me of the challenges and uncertainties awaiting me in the waking world–questions left unanswered, emotions unspoken, and the complications in the relationship we once shared.

With a wistful sigh, I reluctantly detach myself from the dream’s embrace, slowly allowing the details to fade away.

I swing my legs over the edge of the bed, sitting upright and wide-eyed as I reflect on my life since working for Jayden.

It has been adventurous and filled with surprises since the first day. From finding out he was the guy I hooked up with the day before to learning I was just a pawn in his game with his friends.

Nothing has been normal from the first day.

I shake off the thought and make my way into the shower, taking off my clothes and letting chilled water wet my hair and my skin.

I stand face up as the water hits my face, and I don't realize I have been standing in the same position until my alarm goes off and jolts me.

When I get to the office, only Lydia has shown up.

“I didn't know you were such an early bird,” I tease as I walk over to my desk and put down my bag.

“Not exactly,” she replies, typing frantically into her computer, “I have work from yesterday that I have to send in this morning, so I had to be here early. You?”

I walk over to her desk and peer at her computer. “I woke up before my alarm went off. Better to head to work than lie around right?”

“Mmhmm.” Lydia nods. “Coffee?” She gestures toward the cup sitting on her desk.

I would usually reject it, but today, I feel as if I could use it.

“How is your little situation going?”

I would be surprised if Lydia isn’t acting all nice without wanting something in return.

I take a long sip. “I’m handling it.”

“Well, today you’re here early, so I guess you will see when your bouquet comes in.” Lydia smirks.

But she is wrong. No bouquet comes in for me.

Even if I had said I didn’t want it. Even if I had been furious about it, a part of me still expected that he wouldn’t give up that easily.

He had said I was torturing him. That is what I want. For him to pay for how much he hurt me forever, if that was possible.

He still stares at me when he walks into his office, but that isn’t enough for me. I want him on his knees begging me, and I still don’t plan to forgive him.

The day goes by fast, and by 3:00 PM, Jayden has already finished his meetings, but he doesn’t leave like he usually would.

I have finished my tasks for the day, so I respond to emails while he stays on a long phone call.

“Goodnight, Carissa,” Jesse says as he walks past me to the exit. This is the first time he has spoken directly to me in weeks.

“Goodnight,” I respond in shock as I look up to watch him walk away. This is when I realize that the office is empty.

I glance at my watch. 6:39 PM

I quickly pack my bag and knock lightly on Jayden’s door before letting myself in. With his back turned to me, he holds one hand up to signal that I am to wait.

I fold my arms to secure the strap of my bag on my shoulders as I look around the room, moving from one foot to the other while wondering how important the phone call is to last this long.
