I watch Pamela storm out of the office, probably upset about how much of an upper hand I have against her now.

“Things will have to change around here a bit since everyone knows now,” Jayden says as I turn to face him. “You don't do other people’s jobs. You only work for me. They will sort their own emails and they will give you feedback.”

I nod.

If they are going to think anything about me, I might as well make the most out of it.

Chapter thirty

JAYDEN

I’m surprised at how well Carissa received the news of our relationship going public.

I thought it was going to break her, but I now find that she has been handling it pretty well and that her main concern was just the fear that I might ruin everything and make her a laughingstock at the office.

I understand that Carissa’s fears are valid and triggered by the fact that I have put her in that situation before, which is why I’m very determined to make her happy and win back her trust totally, no matter what it takes.

I stand by the kitchen counter, leaning against it with an affectionate gaze fixed on Carissa, who is effortlessly maneuvering pots and pans, preparing a meal for us.

It’s another Saturday, and Carissa has insisted on making me a meal for once.

“It will interest you to know that I come from a long line of great chefs,” she had said with a cheeky smile.

And now I’m forced to believe her as I watch the flick of her wrist as she seasons the dish and the focused yet gentle expression on her face.

The apron she wears emphasizes her effortless elegance even in the casual setting of the house.

The scents of spices and the sizzle of the cooking fill the air, mingling with the warmth of our shared space. I can’t help but marvel at how well Carissa has woven herself into my life, so much so that even my home feels like it was made for her.

I can’t imagine another woman standing there, in that apron. It just wouldn’t feel the same. She creates a sense of completeness that I have never felt before.

Lost in my admiration, I can’t contain my feelings any longer.

“You are amazing, you know that?” I remark, my voice filled with genuine appreciation.

Carissa turns to me with a radiant smile, a touch of surprise in her eyes. “Thank you. I’m just trying something new.”

“It’s not just the cooking,” I continue, stepping closer. “It’s everything about you. The way you handle challenges at work, the Way you handle me so delicately while maintaining your boundaries. You are just incredible.”

A subtle blush tints her cheeks. “Such kind words.”

I close the distance between us and put my arms around her from behind. As I hold her close, I inhale, savoring the exquisite scent that lingers around her.

There is a certain sweetness to her scent, reminiscent of fresh flowers blooming in a lush garden. I close my eyes and take it all in.

This is what home feels like. A profound realization washes over me. In that serene moment amidst the familiarity of my house and the intimate closeness we share, I feel a stirring in my heart, unlike anything I have ever felt before.

It isn’t just the way she cooks for me or how she smells, but the depth of her presence, the test of time that our love has conquered, and how much she has changed me in every aspect of my life that makes me realize she is the one I want to spend the rest of my life with.

“Carissa, you mean everything to me,” I say with a deep breath, my heart pounding with a newly found certainty.

My words hang in the air for a minute before she turns in my arms, meeting my gaze with a blend of curiosity and affection. “I know. You mean a lot to me too.”

A surge of emotions floods my eyes.

She chuckles. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I want to share my life with you,” I reply, hoping she hears the sincerity in my words.
