“Come on, now,” she says and rushes to Jayden’s office. I hurry after her, afraid that my legs will give me away. I could just slump and never get up.

He doesn't look up when we enter. Instead, he’s busy on his phone.

“Sir, this is your new assistant, Carissa Freeman,” Pamela says after clearing her throat.

When he looks up at me, I wish the earth would open up and swallow me. Pamela drags me from behind her into his full view.

I summon the courage to look up at him, and to my surprise, this man has the most expressionless face I have ever seen.

I can detect neither an iota or surprise nor recognition as he continues to stare at me.

“Thank you, Pamela,” he says. “Carissa, May I have a cup of coffee?”

What?

I almost scoff, but he’s still looking at me.

I nod and follow Pamela’s nudges as she leads me to the coffee-making machine.

“Good luck,” she says once outside, and she leaves me on my own.

I can understand that Jayden might be trying to protect his reputation and foster a cordial boss-staff relationship, but right now, he doesn’t look like the same person I met yesterday.

I already know him to be arrogant, and I remember every hard curve on his body from last night. But this boss side of him will take me a while to adjust to.

I walk back into his office with hopes that he will acknowledge me this time with Pamela away.

He doesn’t even look up when I place the mug next to him.

“A–anything else you’ll need, sir?” I stammer.

“Next time you should ask me how I like my coffee,” he replies offhandedly, typing away on his laptop.

“Let Pamela fill you in on those things today,” he adds. “You have a lot of work to catch up on.”

I nod and take that as my cue to leave.

“I did not say you could go,” he calls out when I make my way to the door. I stop dead in my tracks and turn back to face him.

He’s looking at me now, but this time, his eyes are cold and unreadable.

“You only leave when I say you can.”

“I apologize—”

“You can leave,” he interrupts, eyes still fixated on me.

I exhale deeply and hurry out of his office as fast as my legs can carry me.

I walk back to my desk, fuming at whatever Jayden’s reasons are for pretending like he wasn't just inside me last night.

While Pamela talks me through my job as his assistant, I barely pay attention. All I see is his cold eyes and blank face.

I knew I shouldn't have given him that ride last night.

At lunchtime, I hesitantly join a group heading to the office cafeteria.

The conversation flows like a well-practiced dance, covering a range of topics from global economics to gourmet cuisine.
