Today is meant to be a happy one for us both, but especially for her.

“Did I say something? Don’t you like the ring?”

“I love it,” she replies with a sigh. “It’s not about you.”

“Then what is it?” I’m getting really worried now, so I try to hold her hand but I can feel her resisting me. “Talk to me.”

“I was left at the altar once,” she says hesitantly. “I don’t have any expectations this time around.”

“Hey,” I call softly. “Why would you say that?”

She shrugs. “But it’s the truth, Jayden. I know you try to make me see how much you love me, but this is my reality.”

I take a deep breath, calmly taking in Carissa’s concerns.

“Just because someone else didn't appreciate the gem they had doesn't mean someone else won’t come around and appreciate it.”

I hold her gaze, hoping she will feel my emotions through that. “I love you very much, Carissa. I won’t stop saying that because I do. And on our wedding day, I will be there at the altar, waiting for you, my beautiful bride. We will get married, and we will become husband and wife. I would never embarrass you like that.”

I feel the weight leave her body as she leans on me. At that moment, I feel the need to hold her and take away all of her pain.

“I love you so much, Jayden,” she whispers.

This is the second time Carissa has said she loves me tonight, and today happens to be the first day she has said the words to me.

I feel like a lucky man, and I think anyone else would too if they had the chance to be with a woman like Carissa. Too bad her ex was a coward.

“Do you promise that this is forever?” she asks, her voice shaking with emotion.

I squeeze her hand gently and plant a kiss on her head. “What do you think?”

“I hope it is,” she replies.

I lift her face with a finger and stare into her eyes as they allow me access to the depths of her soul. “Yes, it is forever, Carissa. Until the day you say it’s not.”

She leans toward me and caresses my cheek, her breath brushing against the skin on my face, causing tingling sensations.

“I will never say it’s not, you hear me?”

I nod right before she kisses me, leaving me no room to breathe.

“Can you promise that you will stop doubting me?” I ask after I pull away. “Will you open up your heart and give me a chance to love you, without doubts?”

She pauses, searching my eyes.

“Yes,” she nods. “I’ll let you love me however you know how to and no doubts.”

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

“Just trust me and believe that every time I say I love you, I mean it. That is one thing I will never lie about,” I assure her, not taking my eyes off her.

“Okay,” she nods repeatedly and slowly. “Now tell me how you were able to get all of your staff to do that.”

I laugh. “Well, I am their boss, remember?”

“I see.” She rolls her eyes.
