Amber sighs. “Got it, no hitting on your straight friends.”

Alice and I burst into surprised laughter. Amber waves a hand.

“Been there, done that, don’t worry.” She holds out a hand. “It’s still lovely to meet you.”

“Likewise,” Alice says, beaming.

I look between them. “I actually could see your energies ruining my life, so maybe don’t bond too hard.”

“Too late!” Alice declares.

“I’m so excited—” A ringing cell phone interrupts Amber. Sighing, she picks it up. “I must take this. Excuse me.”

Amber grabs her phone, purse, and jacket and darts out of the office. I can see her hook a left towards the stairs.

Interesting. What drama is Amber hiding?

I decide not to press. After all, I really don’t want her to press to find out what dramaI’mhiding.

Alice takes her seat, spinning in her chair. “So, she’s nice.”

I snort. “You love anyone who compliments you.”

“Good taste, is all,” Alice replies, grinning.

“What are you doing here?” I ask. I close the folder that’s open on my desk. I know that Alice wouldn’t look even if I asked her to, but these documents are technically confidential.

“You stopped answering your phone, so I’m here to make sure you’re still alive.” She picks up a pen and starts twiddling it between her fingers.

I snatch it and put it back. “I’ve just been busy.”

“Sure,” Alice shrugs. “But how was I supposed to tell the difference between being busy and being murdered by your new beau.”

“Alice!” I hiss. I look over my shoulder. “Can you not?—”

“What? No one is here!” Alice whispers.

I lean in towards her anyway. “It doesn’t matter, we can’t talk about that here?—”

“I’m not talking about it!” Alice throws her hands up. “I’m just saying?—”

“Saying is talking!”

“I’m justsaying, it wouldn’t kill you to answer your phone?—”

“Alice, please?—”

I hear footsteps and spin nervously in my chair. David walks through the office, his steps hesitating and slowing when he sees Alice.

“Speak of the devil,” Alice mutters.

“Alice, stop.”

She does, though the look she gives me is clearly unimpressed.

I stand up, and Alice does, too.

David looks between us. “I don’t believe we’ve met, Miss…?”
