Standing in the doorway, Jessi, Lewis, and my kids stare at me with huge eyes and dropped jaws.

“Uh, surprise, David!” Jessi exclaims, her voice strangled and surprised. She has one hand over Angie’s eyes, but Angie’s already wiggled free and is looking at Laura and I with curiosity.

“Laura, what the—” Lewis cuts himself off, glancing at my kids, and then looks back at me with fury on his face. “What are you doing here?”

“I—What am I doing here, what areyoudoing here!?” Laura throws her hands up, her expression stricken and her skin pale as ice.

Jessi and I are looking between them. Our eyes catch and she shrugs one shoulder, shaking her head.

“How do you two know each other?” I ask.

Lewis takes a step forward, separating himself from Jessi and the kids. “Laura,” Lewis says. “Is my kid sister.”

“I’m twenty-five, Lewis,” Laura says, rolling her eyes.

“Twenty-five!?” Jessi exclaims.

“Not helping, Laura,” I gripe under my breath.

“Dad,” Benji waves a hand in the air. “Who’s that?”

Laura pales.

Lewis scowls.

Jessi sighs.

I decide that the universe is playing a practical joke on me.

CHAPTER 11

Laura

Idon’t know what I expected when someone walked in on me kissing my boss in his office, but seeing my big brother was definitely the very last thing.

“Laura, what the—” Lewis cuts himself off, glancing at the children he walked in here with. He looks at David, and I have the faint thought that if looks could kill, David would be a puddle of goo.

I make a half-aborted wave, and Lewis’ eyes snap back to mine. “What are you doing here?”

“I—What am I doing here? What areyoudoing here!?” I exclaim.

How in God’s name did this happen? Why would mybrotherbe here? I know he works at this firm, and I know he’s dating a coworker’s ex, but?—

I look at the children.

A little girl with David’s gold eyes. A teenage boy with David’s nose.

I look at the woman, who stares at me with something akin to curiosity.

Who looks familiar… like I’ve seen her in photographs…

Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no?—

“How do you two know each other?” David asks, his voice neutral and blank.

Lewis takes a step forward. His glare at David is withering, and it makes me want to vomit. “Laura,” Lewis says. “Is my kid sister.”

“I’m twenty-five, Lewis,” I reply instantly. I roll my eyes at him, but that just makes everything worse rather than cutting the tension.
