Jessi looks… I don’t know. I don’t know her well enough to interpret her expression.

But I certainly, certainlyfeel strange about it.

I look at David. He looks at me.

The consequences we were so afraid of are here.

His words from earlier—just a few minutes ago, really—are still ringing in my ears. They’re stillhurtingme. And the bittersweet farewell isn’t something I’m over yet.

But now my brother is here, and David’s kids, and this woman who I know Lewis wants to marry and is meant to bemysister-in-lawwho now probably thinks I’m just some ladder-climbing, man-seducing whore…

If it was anyone else but Lewis and his girlfriend, I don’t know that I’d care.

Except… that’s not true.

Because Angie is looking at me so sweetly, and Benjamin is looking at his dad with such disgust. I can’t… I can’t be the reason that this kid thinks his dad is the kind of guy to…

To what? Sleep with his employee? Sleep with someone half his age? David is. Daviddid.

But…

“I’m David’s girlfriend,” I blurt out.

The whole room freezes.

David’s eyes flicker over to mine.

Play…

Along.

His eyes widen just a little, and the crease between his brow releases. It’s a minute expression, but after being with him for the last few weeks—and, perhaps more importantly, after working with him and seeing how he prepared his arguments for cases—I can read it.

Gratitude.

“I did not know that she was your sister, of course, Lewis,” David says, his voice more confident and sure. He steps closer to me.

My brother’s eyes narrow. He looks at the space between us—now smaller, now dwindling as David’s arm goes around my shoulder.

I focus very, very hard on not tensing.

“Laura is the woman you were telling me about?” He asks. I look at David with a frown. When was he talking about me?“The one who… might have been worth complicated?”

David’s eyes shutter. He nods once, tight.

Lewis sighs.

Righteous fury fills my veins. “You toldLewis?”

All I can think about is Alice and his stupid, mean, dramatic, and now apparently, hypocritical reaction to Alice.

“Not specifically,” David says quickly. “Just… that there was someone.”

“Why didn’tIknow there was someone?” Jessi demands.

David looks lost. He looks between us all.

I swallow my rage. I know how to hold myself together.
