The one where I broke my arm on the playground and four different kids laughed at me for crying was a bad one! The one where Lewis told me that he hated me and my dad also sucked, even if he did apologize and take me for ice cream afterward. The one where I broke up with my first boyfriend and the one where I woke up still drunk before a very important exam in law school were tied for the most terrible.

Today feels somehow so much worse than all of them, even though I know that can’t possibly be true.

“Honey bunches,” Alice sings sweetly. “Justtellme.”

“No,” I sniffle. I shake my head emphatically.

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“How about you do tell me?”

“No way.”

“But what if you did?”

“No.”

“Yes.”

We glare at each other, a complete stalemate.

“I can’t tell you where David lives,” I say slowly, hoping she listens this time. “Because you’ll go over there and?—”

“Fight him to the death,” she finishes.

Alice is nodding serenely, like this is a perfectly acceptable response.

I throw my hands up.

“It was my decision,” I tell her. “I mean, it was complicated, but I am the one who said we’re dating.”

“I know,” Alice sighs, deflating. She lifts her margarita and tips it towards me.

I settle back into the couch and we clink our glasses.

When I came home from work, Alice was already in my kitchen, mixing drinks.

Settled into pajamas with a cozy fire place YouTube video on the television, itshouldbe an incredibly nice time, especially with the weather really starting to turn to winter lately. And itisnice—but it’s also stressful trying to figure out my next steps.

“I know I encouraged this,” Alice says, and she looks down sadly at her glass. “I’m sorry.”

I reach out to grab her hand. “Alice, no. It’s not your fault. I wouldn’t have done anything if I hadn’twantedto.”

Alice sighs heavily. “I don’t know. I pressured?—”

“Alice, it’s not like the man fired me. It’s not the worst-case scenario.”

She lifts a brow. “So, Lewisisn’tgoing to absolutely go rogue on that double date and beat David up senseless?”

“He might,” I allow. I down the rest of my drink.

“Laura—”
