“The meeting’s over,” I say. My voice comes out gravelly and warning.

Laura smiles at me. “Yes, I heard.”

“Then what are you?—”

“I would like to have a word with you,” she interrupts me. “When you…” her eyes flicker across my face, down my chest, right to my— “Have the time.”

She leaves, moving slowly and leisurely. My gaze stays trapped on her until she’s turned a corner, and I’m all alone.

Jesus, what she does to me.

It’s been like this since the dinner with Jessi and Lewis.

I don’t know what it was that set her off. The knowledge I acquired from listening to her passing remarks, her social media, her bookshelf? The laughter we shared as a unit, the first time since my divorce, I felt like Jessi and I could both have something real and honest without it affecting the family. The kiss?—

I knew the kiss was too far.

But she had been there, looking so beautiful and sweet, her expression warm and delighted to see me, and?—

Yes, I kissed Laura, and I shouldn’t have.

But did I deserve to be punished for that? Did I deserve to have her too-pink lips and her red nails in my godforsaken business meeting?

Someone knocks on the door, and I nearly jump out of my skin.

Piper pops her head in, eyebrows raised. “Sir? You’re… sitting in an empty room.”

“Astute,” I mutter. I run my hands over my face and groan. Standing up, my back cracks. “What is it, Piper?”

“The banquet wants your RSVP by tomorrow. I did some digging, and Jessica is going with someone called Lewis Parker.”

I sigh. I had completely forgotten about the annual charity banquet. Jessi usually accompanied me, but of course she’d be going with Lewis this year.

“Thank you, Piper.”

I dismiss her and walk slowly back to my office. I check on a few of the attorneys as I go past. There’s more than just Laura as a new employee, after all.

Thankfully, this work isn’t so mindless—I actually manage to be helpful and productive for the next few hours as I help the junior attorneys with their case questions.

By the time I make it to my office, I’m actually being productive. When Piper leaves for the day, I decide to stay. The kids are with their mom, after all, and I’m on a roll.

I get so lost in it, in fact, that I don’t even notice when it gets dark outside. I don’t look up again until I hear a knock on the office door.

My head snaps up, and Laura is letting herself in. Behind her, the office is dark.

“I thought I was the last one here,” she says.

I gesture for her to continue in. “Looks like we both worked late.”

“I just thought I would say goodnight.”

I rub my hands on my knees, trying not to appear or feel nervous. “Nice of you.”

Laura closes the door behind her. She walks without looking at me to the big windows behind my desk.

“It’s pretty up here at night,” she says quietly.

I swallow hard. My hands clench into fists as I keep myself right where I’m at.
