Page 23 of Unfounded

“What happened?” I find myself demanding to know, though I know I should get it from her and not my brother who was watching her interview behind a one-way mirror.

“She was with the guy for almost three years,” Rosco growls. “I’m sure she had feelings for the guy. I could tell it was still difficult for her to talk about, but she didn’t seem to be overly upset about it now. The fucker wanted her to share him with multiple partners, both male and female, and be shared by them too. Like a group orgy relationship or some shit.” I know my eyebrows shoot up my forehead in dramatic fashion. Everyone is entitled to their own thing, but the very idea of sharing Marley makes my hackles rise. The thought of another woman touching me after being with Marley makes my skin crawl. I can’t believe this nameless, faceless fucker had, had Marley in his bed and wanted to share her or himself with someone else.

“What the fuck?” I exclaim not believing what I’m hearing.

“Yeah.” Rosco’s face mirrors the disgust I feel. “He’d apparently been seeing other people during their whole relationship, but waiting until she was fully vested in him before he pitched the idea to her. I got the impression once he dropped that bomb, she dumped his ass right away.”

“You think he’s involved in this?” I ask, wondering if the guy was pissed enough that she refused him to retaliate, but surely he wouldn’t have waited so long to get his revenge.

“I don’t think so,” Rosco replies thoughtfully. “She said she hasn’t heard from him since they split. I don’t think he would have waited five years, but who knows.” He shrugs his shoulders. “I’ll run a background check on him and dive deeper if anything suspicious pops up.” I nod.

“Thanks brother,” I say as he climbs to his feet. A ping from my phone indicates Kelvin texting me back.

“Please tell me that’s something for me to do?” Rosco begs. “I mean I didn’t mind babysitting Marley today, but I’m more of an action man, you know? Sitting around while she filled out applications and did interviews was boring as fuck. Not to mention, it gave me way too much time to think about sis and her situation.”

“Interviews? I thought she was only filling out applications.” I didn’t expect her to get interviews so quickly, but this is the service industry, which has a lot of turn overs while remaining busy. They have to move quickly, I’m sure.

“Um, yeah, about that.” He stalls, giving me a sheepish look. “She got a job, and I know you’re not going to like it. Hell, I tried my best to talk her out of even applying, but she insisted. Before I knew what was happening, she came back out to the truck and said she starts tomorrow afternoon.” He ducks as if he’s expecting me to throw something at him, which I should. He let her go in some place he didn’t think she should be working at alone?

“Why did she go in alone?” I yell. “You were supposed to be guarding her. You can’t do that from the truck!”

“She wasn’t having it, man,” he defends. “I tried going in with her every place we stopped, but she got all pissy and said she was a grown ass woman and didn’t want or need me to hold her hand.” I sigh in exasperation. I can just imagine her telling him off, but at the same time, he’d had a responsibility to watch over her for her own good whether she liked it or not. Am I being a caveman? Fuck yeah, I am, but her safety is my first priority. I’d rather her be alive and pissed than happy and dead.

“Where’s this new job?” I growl in frustration. He pales a little before answering.

“Joe’s Truck Stop out on I-264.” Rosco ducks as I whiz the first thing that comes to my hand, which unfortunately is a filefolder, so nothing hits him, just a stack of papers fluttering all over my office.

“What the fuck, Rosco?” I bellow, knowing the whole damn office can hear me. “You might as well have set her up with a fucking pimp! That place is a cesspool for crime.” Rosco at least has the decency to look embarrassed over this.

“I tried to tell her, brother.” Rosco hurries to defend himself. “I swear, but she wasn’t hearing it. I was hoping you could talk her out of it. I told her she needs to let us look into what’s been happening to her before she tries to get a job. She wasn’t interested in listening to what I had to say. I figured you’d have more influence over her than me.” He smirks at me. When I don’t respond, he takes liberty to give me advice. “You know, deny her orgasms until she agrees not to take the job.” This time I grab the stapler from my desk and whiz it at his head. He dodges it of course.

“Don’t be talking about Marley in that way!” I yell at him again. He’s cackling as he hurries out of my office and down the hall toward the computer room. I swear, I may not be a parent, but I’m raising a bunch of children. Bo appears in my office door.

“What’s all the yelling about?” Bo asks, leaning against my door jam.

“Rosco acting like he’s fourteen instead of thirty-three.” I huff in frustration. “I swear I have enough shit to deal with without you all acting like fucking children.” I suddenly remember I’d gotten a text moments ago. Pulling out my phone, I see Kelvin’s text saying he’ll swing by the house before he comes to the office. At least, that’s one thing to not worry about.

“Don’t be including me in this,” Bo grumbles. “I’m my own man, and I’m very mature.”

“Yeah.” I snort derisively, “Says the man, who just a couple days ago, super glued Enos’s ass to his chair.” Bo bursts out in laughter, slapping his knee.

“Bro, that was a good one.” Bo chuckles. “You should haveseen his face when he couldn’t get up without taking the whole damn thing with him. Fucking gold man!” I shake my head, but can’t keep from laughing along. It would have been pretty funny, if we were in middle school.

“You find out anything?” I ask, hoping to actually get some work done today. Bo sobers as we focus back on our actual jobs.

“I scoured every home in her neighborhood.” he sighs heavily. “No one has security cameras. Not that I’m surprised. It’s not the not the kind of neighborhood to have such, Luke. The area is rundown at best. You can’t let her go back there; you know that, right?” I glare at my brother as if he’s as ignorant as he’s acting.

“Yeah, dumbass, I know that,” I grumble in irritation. “You really think I would even consider letting her go back there?” He shakes his head to the negative.

“Nah, bro.” He grins at me. “I know there’s no way in hell you’ll let her go back there, but you know I love to give you shit.”

“That I do.” I pull the file back from the to-do stack. “I need to get some actual work done. So, if you don’t mind, maybe you can go do some work, too.” I smirk at him as he rises to his feet.

“You were a lot more fun before you fell in love,” Bo murmurs as he leaves my office. I ignore his comment. I’m no different than I was before. Well that’s not entirely true. I am more protective, especially of my woman, but I’ve always tried to get them to act like adults. I double down on my efforts to focus so I can get home to her.

Twenty minutes later, Kelvin texts to let me know he stopped by the house. Marley is sleeping peacefully in her room. The house is secure, and he’s going to hang around keep her safe until I can come home. He has his laptops and will be working from my home the rest of the afternoon.

My phone rings. Picking it up, I notice it’s the damn casualty assistance people again. Please, let it be good news. “Robertson,” I answer curtly, fearing I’ll hear the same again useless update again.
