Maya looked at the pack leaders gathered in the small room. I was beginning to wonder if she was too terrified to talk, but then her eyes landed on Celeste, unconscious in bed with monitors beeping next to her. Anger and determination replaced the fear on her delicate face.

“My parents were from Sky Moon. They were killed the night the Blood Moon challenged and killed our Alpha. We were forced to come here afterward.” There was a chorus of murmuring from the other alphas. We all knew the story of what happened to the Sky Moon Pack. What happened was borderline murder, but the council declared it legal. As there were no known survivors, all they could base their case on was the story provided by Alpha Geoff and his warriors.

“In this case, I think we can all agree that considering the animosity the Alpha’s daughter has shown towards this child, legal guardianship should shift to the Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack. Anyone disagree?” Alpha Troy looked around the room. No one objected, though Alpha Geoff looked like he could kill.

“Can you agree to that, Alpha Geoff? Otherwise, we will need to contact the council and have this matter transferred to their hands,” Alpha Troy pointed out.

Alpha Geoff cleared his throat before he agreed to Maya leaving with Celeste, but I couldn’t help but notice the way Luna Luisa paled further at the mention of involving the council.

“Very well. This is an unfortunate end to a very pleasant visit. I believe we will take our leave. Alpha Markus, anything you need before we go?” Alpha Troy asked of me.

“I will remain in this hospital with my Beta and guards until my mate is well enough to travel. All I need is a place for my guards to rest until that happens,” I answered.

Alpha Geoff growled but nodded. He grabbed his Luna by the arm roughly and dragged her out, their spoiled daughter stomping behind.

Once I was alone with Gillian again, I sighed and sat back down. I took a bagel and, after biting it, made a face and spit in the trash. Maya giggled from the side, and when I looked at her, she paled.

“I'm sorry, Alpha. It’s just that for the last seven years, the only one who’s been able to cook anything edible was Celeste. Don’t expect any miracles from the rest.” I laughed at her words and looked at my Beta.

“Order us something edible for lunch? I feel we’ll all end up with food poisoning otherwise.” Gillian laughed, and I saw his eyes glaze over while he mind linked one of our warriors.

“Done and done. Now, do we know how long it will take for the Luna to wake up?”

“Doc said a couple of days at most. She looks better than last night, at least.” I stroked her swollen face gently, feeling the tingles from the bond on my hand. She stirred but didn’t wake up. Despite all the injuries, I could already tell my mate was breathtakingly beautiful. I sat back on the chair and looked at Maya again.

“You did well. That took courage,” I praised her, and she smiled shyly.

“I thought about what Celeste would do for all of us.”

‘I can see you’re already falling hard.’Gillian smirked through the mind link. I rolled my eyes but smiled.

Chapter six

Celeste

Thesmelloffoodwoke me, mixed with the smell of alcohol and that strange cologne of pistachios and figs.

I tried to move my arm, but my side hurt, so I opened my eyes instead. Maya was sitting with a group of men around a small table, eating and chatting amicably. We were in the hospital, but this room looked different than what I would expect a hospital room to look like. It was almost homey. There were comfortable chairs, blankets and a laptop scattered around the room. One of the men with his back to me stiffened and turned, and I was met with the most beautiful grey eyes.

I felt Kara sigh contently in the back of my mind. She sounded exhausted.

Are you doing okay?I asked with a bit of concern

I am. It just took a lot of energy to heal you. I need sleep. Be nice to him, okay?she asked.

I will try. You rest,I told her.

The man stood up and approached me like a weary man waiting for the rabbit to be spooked. He was tall, at least six feet three, and muscular. The plain white T-shirt was tight around his biceps. His broad chest tapered down to a small waist, and I could almost see the v-line leading down into his jeans through the shirt's cloth. It made my mouth water.

“Celeste?” he softly called my attention back to his handsome face. I looked back up into his concerned eyes. His eyes glazed over, and one of the warriors sitting at the table got up. “My name is Markus. Do you know where you are?”

“Hos-Hospital,” I replied with a scratchy voice. My throat was so dry despite my previous thoughts. It was hard to talk. Markus provided me with a glass of water, soothing my throat.

Maya ran past him and gave me a hug.

“I was so scared you wouldn’t wake up. You saved me!” I patted her back awkwardly. I was not used to this kind of contact. I looked back at Markus to find him smiling warmly. I tried to return the smile, but I wasn’t sure it came out as nice as his. Smiling was another thing I wasn’t used to doing. Looking away from him, I noticed the rest of the men were all standing around the table, their food forgotten.

“You should keep eating. I didn’t mean to interrupt,” I said. They bowed their heads and stood to the side when Dr. Castle walked inside.
