“Of course,” I said, hoping to be able to remove any obstacles standing in their way.

“Would I be able to continue being a warrior in your pack? Our previous alpha and some of the other alpha’s around here in Mexico will not let women work as warriors. Alpha Diego and this pack is an exception, not the norm,” Brenda said, looking over at Gabriel and looking like she was bracing herself for the answer. Gabriel simply smiled at her encouragingly, and I wondered if they discussed this already, but she needed confirmation before she accepted him.

“If that is your wish. We encourage women to pursue what they want to do. Luna Celeste had an idea already, but we will respect whatever decision you make regarding your career,” I told her and nodded at Celeste to continue. She blushed as she was in the middle of munching on her beef.

“Well, I would like Gabriel to remain as my guard, but as luna, we will have to travel on occasion for pack business. I don’t like the idea of separating mates, so I thought, if you were up for it, you could continue training to become the twins’ official guard once they arrive. That way, you could travel together. In the meantime, you can train and do whatever you need. Take on assignments as you see fit,” Celeste explained. Brenda’s face remained blank, giving nothing away.

“You would trust me to guard your pups?” she asked.

“Of course. You will have to show your skills to our trainers and follow whatever training program they feel you need, but I know the Moon Goddess would not have paired you with Gabriel if you were not as fierce and loyal as him,” Celeste answered without hesitation. Celeste had paid more attention to Brenda throughout the week and felt comfortable with what she'd learned of her character, while I discretely asked Diego about her yesterday. People respected her as a warrior. She was one of the few female warriors in the pack, which meant she had earned it and put up with the older generation dealing with change. Not all of them would have welcomed her, which meant she also had thick skin.

A smile slowly formed on Brenda’s face as she processed Celeste’s words.

“I would be honored to be the twin’s guard. Yes, I accept,” she answered, but she was looking at Gabriel, not us.

“I’m going to assume that answers my question, as well,” I said, trying to hold in my laugh. “You two may go. Gabriel, take today off. Celeste and I will be together all day.”

“Thank you, Alpha, Luna,” he rushed out, grabbing Brenda’s hand and practically flying out of the conference room. Everyone chuckled at his urgency, well aware the next time we saw them, they would be marked and mated.

“Well, shall we go have breakfast?” Celeste asked brightly. “Evergreen, can you show us your front-end user software before supper? Diego might need a bit to play with it so he can use it properly.”

“Yes, Luna. I’ll have it ready before lunch,” Evergreen answered as we headed toward the dining room.

Chapter forty-eight

Celeste

It’sbeenalong, teary day. This pregnancy was really fucking with my emotions. We woke up early to make it to the appointment, and I went through half a box of tissues. It took Diego cracking jokes before I calmed down while we said goodbye. Then, I needed another box when I watched Camila say goodbye to Lupe and Tomas before we boarded the plane. It wasn’t until we were in the air, and Mateo once again opened a bag of chips, making me fly to the bathroom, that I managed to calm down.

Poor Mateo looked like a child put in timeout when I finally returned to my seat, where Markus was waiting for me with a glass of water.

“You really like sour cream and onion, don’t you?” I teased, and he just turned a beet red.

“Sorry, Luna. You didn't have nausea at any of the food we had, so I thought it had passed,” he answered sheepishly.

“To be fair, so did I.” I grinned, then caught the lingering smell of the chips and dashed back into the bathroom.

We spent the first hour of the flight in silence when I heard Gillian clear his throat on the seats next to us.

“So...” he said, looking at Markus and me with a pointed look. “You two were clearly hiding something from me all week. Then, you not only knew that I would find my mate, having gotten my room ready for a romantic night, but you also had a game plan ready to deal with the immigration issue?” The suspicion was thick in his words, making me fidget in my seat.

“Ehhhh,” I started.

“Welllll...” Markus said.

“Well?” Gillian crossed his arms, a curious Camila placing her hand on his arm and leaning forward so that she could listen to our explanation.

“Selene told me you should learn Spanish because you were meeting your mate ‘where it all began for me,’ but she also told me not to tell you,” I rushed out quickly, then looked at my phone like it was the most important thing in the world.

“So you two have known I would meet my mate in Mexico since you ran away a month and a half ago?” he asked incredulously and I looked out of the corner of my eye to watch his face because I couldn’t tell if he was mad or not.

“No! I only found out a couple of weeks ago,” Markus threw me under the bus, and I glared at my mate.

“Selene said not to tell you! Andyou, we’re supposed to be a united front,” I glared at Markus, crossing my arms and turning my head to look out the window.

“What I don’t get,” Gillian said slowly. “Is how you managed to get Markus to keep it a secret for so long. This man gossips more than Christians at church.”

Everyone on the plane laughed. I turned around, and my annoyance dissipated when I saw Markus blushing.
