I sat up from the bed and looked around. There, in the dark, sitting on a chair, was Huitzilopochtli, his eyes fixed on me. I scrambled to the farthest corner of the bed, covering my stomach defensively when he stood and turned on the light.
“Relax, child of Chantico. If I wanted to kill you here, I would have done it at any point during the twenty-four hours you’ve been asleep,” he said, and I was surprised he spoke English so well. He must have read my face because he smirked. “Surprised I can speak English? I have been alive for a millennia. I speak many languages.”
“If you’re not going to kill me, why did you take me?” I countered.
“I didn’t say I wasn’t going to kill you. I’m just not doing it now. It will be during the full moon when Coyolxauhqui can watch,” he spat.
My eyes brimmed with tears at his words.
“My pups,” I whispered, hugging my stomach.
He flinched ever so slightly that I could almost believe he actually felt bad.
“Yes, well, that is unfortunate. I didn’t know you were pregnant. I did try to take you when you were younger to avoid more bloodshed,” he replied as if that excused his actions. He moved over to a mini fridge and opened it.
“There is water and food in here as well as snacks. There’s some clothing in the drawers and a bathroom through that door. There’s no way in or out but through this door, so don’t try to do anything rash. You will only hurt yourself trying. I will be back in a few hours. Try to do anything to escape, and I will make sure you live longer than your pups,” he threatened and left the room. Several padlocks click into place behind him. I let out a sob when I heard his footsteps receding.
