“LIAR!! First, you took everyone’s attention when it should have been on me. Then you took my mate. I was supposed to find my mate that night, not you. Alpha Markus belongs to me.”

Kara growled in the back of my mind as she woke up, her hackles rising at her words.

They already know the truth. Let me have a go at her,she snarled.

We shouldn’t. We will get Markus in trouble, and you need to rest,I told her.

She’s asking for it. She wants our mate, she growled.

“He’s my mate. He never belonged to you.” I felt my eyes shifting to black, giving her a warning.

Sandra blinked, shocked by my actions, and then she growled and charged me, her claws extending from her fingers.

“STOP!” I heard Markus’s alpha command. Though as his mate the command didn’t affect me, Sandra could do nothing but obey. “You dare attack my mate again? Do you know the penalty for attacking a luna?” He roared.

“I should be your mate, not that worthless piece—” She wisely stopped talking when Markus’ eyes turned black, and his wolf roared, shaking the portraits on the wall.

“You will not speak of my mate this way. Alpha Geoff, get this pup out of my sight before I take back everything we said in that meeting,” his wolf warned.

Alpha Geoff grabbed Sandra by the throat and dragged her away, his face red and screaming at her. “WHAT THE FUCK DID I TELL YOU EARLIER? STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM HER. ARE YOU TRYING TO GET YOURSELF KILLED? WHY CAN’T YOU DO ANYTHING I FUCKING ASK OF YOU. DISA-FUCKING-POINTMENT IS ALL I GET FROM YOU.”

I looked back at Markus, whose eyes were still black. His wolf was still in control, and it was still pissed.

“Where is Zack?” he growled, turning to Beta Gillian.

“I will find out, Atlas. Can you please let Markus back in control?” Beta Gillian said slowly, as if not to rattle Markus’ wolf‘s fragile control, and I gulped. I fucked up.

I heard running and saw Zack and Maya running toward us, skidding to a stop when he saw his pissed-off alpha.

“Alpha, I—“ Zack started.

“You were supposed to be with her! She could have been killed!!” Atlas roared. Everyone bowed their head and exposed their neck. I was unaffected, so I moved in front of Zack when Atlas stalked our way, worried that he would hurt him. My actions made him halt his steps.

“It’s my fault,” I said, standing at my full five-foot-nine height. I wasn’t about to let anyone get hurt because of me, and despite only knowing him for a few hours, I didn’t think he would hurt me.

“He disobeyed my order. He put you at risk. He must be punished. Please step aside, little mate.” Atlas was still growling but tried to sound gentle. His eyes were still zeroed in on Zack, though.

I needed to diffuse the situation. Instead of moving aside, I moved forward slowly. Beta Gillian hesitated as if wanting to interfere, but I held my hand up to him, asking him to wait. When I was within reach, I touched Markus’ chest. Atlas finally broke the glare he was giving Zack to look down at where my hand was on his chest in surprise. His breathing was harsh, and I moved a little closer when he didn't slap my hand away.

He cocked his head as he studied me, then grabbed and crushed me to his chest. He inhaled deeply, and I felt his arms relax a little more, but didn’t let me go. Beta Gillian’s eyes widened with shock to our left, then he smirked and winked at me. I pulled back after a bit, and Kara was quick to grumble in my head at the loss of contact.

“I’m sorry,” I said firmly. “I told him to go help Maya. I don’t have a lot of stuff to pack.” I looked up and saw that his eyes were back to their normal gray. Markus sighed and tried to tuck one of my unruly curls behind my ear. It was a losing battle with all the knots in it right now, but I couldn’t bring myself to tell him to stop.

“I would prefer that you have a guard with you at all times while not in our territory. It’s not safe otherwise,” he said with a pointed look, and I blushed.

“Zack, please load Maya’s belongings into the car. We are leaving now. I don’t want to be here any longer than we need to. I will help Celeste.”

I looked back at Zack and mouthed “Sorry” to him. He looked at me and smiled with gratitude. A small growl escaped Markus’ chest, and I tried hard not to giggle.

“So, where is your room?” He smiled at me after Zack and Maya left, making me pale.

Markus

IlostcontrolofAtlas when he saw that bitch Sandra charging Celeste. She still looked so fragile in her hospital gown. But, the surprising part was how she stood up to Atlas and how she managed to soothe him into giving me back control. Atlas wasn’t usually a beast with a temper. He was fair and in control of his more animalistic tendencies, but the bond screamed at both of us to protect this magnificent, precious creature in front of us, and he feared what would have happened to her if we hadn’t shown up. What we didn’t expect was to see her stand tall in front of us when Atlas threatened the guard that allowed Sandra to get so close. She didn’t pull away when Atlas crushed her to our chest, inhaling her delicious scent like a drug to calm down. She showed so much strength in those small acts that there was no doubt in my mind that she was made to put me in my place.

Mate is already defending the pack. Mate is already acting like a luna. She is stronger than she looks,Atlas said as he gave me back control.I still want to break his bones,he added, giving Zack the stink eye from the back of my head. I just smiled at his words, and he let out a purr and curled up in the back of my head, his attention once again on his mate. I noticed Gillian and the warriors’ shocked faces as they noticed I was back in control. Atlas may not lose his temper often, but when he did, he didn’t usually back down so quickly and without exacting his punishment.

“So… where is your room?” I repeated my question again when she didn’t answer me. I frowned, confused when she first paled, then blushed. Goddess, she was beautiful, and I resisted the urge to caress the blush on her face.
