“Sure. I can send you the application to become a member and you-”

“No,” I cut him off abruptly. There was no way I could sign up as a member. Giovanni had eyes and ears all over Venice and would find out in an instant. “Look, it’s complicated and I can’t sign up as a member. I - I need you to get me in some other way. Only for one night.”

There was a long pause. “Elle, I’m sorry, but I can’t. I have just got this job and it was a fucking mission to even get in. I can’t risk-”

“How much?” I asked quickly. I had learned a few things from growing up in the mafia. One, the different ways to kill a man before he can scream. Two, that disloyalty to family is punishable by death. And three, that everyone has a price.

“What?” he asked.

“How much? I will pay you anything if you can get me into the club discreetly. No questions asked. I cannot be seen and it cannot be known that I was there.”

Another long pause. “50,000 euros.”

“Done,” I said quickly. I was expecting him to want more to be honest.

“Fuck,” he groaned. “I should have gone higher.”

I laughed, “Yes, you should have.”

“Give me a few days to get things sorted,” he said in a serious tone.

“No, it must be tonight. I can only get away tonight,” I demanded and he scoffed loudly into the earpiece in disbelief. “I will double your money.”

“Fine. Shit, woman you are hard to turn down,” he chuckled. “Meet me behind the club at midnight. If you are not there, I still get the money, right?”

I rolled my eyes. “You get the money, after I get in.”

“One night?”

“Yes,” I smiled.

“Okay.” He hung up and I dropped my phone back into my bag with a shaky hand. Oh fucking hell, what had I just gotten myself into? A sex club? I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply. I didn’t have to do anything I didn’t want to do. I could just go and see what it’s like. Experience something I never had before. Okay. Elenora, pull up your big girl pants. We are going to a sex club. Now, how to get away from the wedding without anyone noticing…

La Casetta

“Cristo, Elle! Is she alright?” Finn asked as he escorted me up to mamma’s hotel room. I had explained to Gio that she had gone to bed early because she wasn’t feeling well and I was going to stay with her. “She’s been doing so well.”

I nodded, “I think there is something going on with her and Marco. I think she likes him and she feels guilty.”

Finn raised his eyebrows, but remained silent as we stepped out of the elevator onto the top floor. Gio and Liv had the penthouse at the end but mamma, Sani and Raya were all sleeping in the other suite on this floor. Finn nodded to the guard on duty outside the elevator and my stomach dropped. How was I going to get past him again?

I turned to Finn as I reached the suite door. “Thanks, but you should go back down and enjoy the rest of the party. I am just going to crash in here tonight, I’m exhausted,” I whispered to stop the guard from hearing me and faked a yawn which turned into a real one as he nodded carefully.

“You sure?”

I hated lying to him. But if I told him the truth about where I was going tonight, he would lock me in my room. Best friend or not. “Yes. I will see you in the morning.”

He saluted me and walked off as I knocked quietly on the door, before swiping my spare card to enter. I slipped inside stealthily and walked through the empty living room. All the lights were off, but a warm glow shone from behind one of the bedroom doors. I knocked on it again, not quite sure what I would find, but when there was no answer, I silently cracked it open. There in the bed was mamma, fully clothed and passed out. Marco was slouched in the armchair in the corner of the room, his silver gun on the table next to him. His head was back and his eyes were closed, a low snore coming from his nose. I smiled at the scene. Suddenly, he jumped up, grabbing his gun and aiming it at me. I nearly screamed as I raised my hand in the air and froze. He dropped the gun and exhaled loudly when he realised who it was.

“Signorina, mi dispiace tanto,” he apologised and I shook my head.

“No, I am sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you. I just wanted to check in on her before I went to bed,” I smiled and he looked over at my peaceful mother.

“She has had water and her pills. As soon as her head hit the pillow, she passed out,” he said carefully, sitting back down in the chair. I nodded.

“Okay. Well, I better go. Finn is waiting for me outside to take me back to my room,” I lied. “Marco? Thank you. For caring.”

He shrugged his big shoulders and avoided my gaze as he looked over at mamma. “She has been through hell and back. I just want to make sure she is okay.”
