“I’ll think of something. Some way to have control over Elio or destroy him. I need you to protect Elle at all costs while I am in the South. I know Lorenzo is going to pull some shit soon. He’s lost his head over Isabelle. I take it Giovanni has stepped up her protection?”

“Of course. She's not even allowed to leave the estate,” I nodded.

“And keep that prick Enzo Aiani away from her,” he suddenly growled, his eyes narrowed into slits of pure jealousy. The image of Enzo came to my mind. Should I tell him? He had confided in me and I knew I should too.

“That might be a problem.”

“Why?” he glared at me, already sensing he wasn’t going to like what I was about to say.

“He is set on marrying her and now, I think Giovanni will encourage it. To keep her safe. Being married to a Boss and being the sister of another will provide her with double the amount of protection. No one wants to go to war with two mafia families over a woman. Except you it would seem,” I tried to joke but the rage on his face was telling me it was lost on him.

“She won’t marry him,” he said, shaking his head, but the worry was evident in his eyes.

“I don’t think she will agree to it either. She knows her own mind,” I stated, which seemed to reassure him a little. “But she is fucking heartbroken. And people do stupid shit to try and get over someone else.”

“Then I want you to fucking kill him!” Alessio roared. “He comes near her; he even lays a finger on her and you kill him. Make it look like an accident, I don’t fucking care how you do it.”

I held his gaze, motionless. He frowned when I didn’t immediately agree. “I can’t do that.”

“Why the fuck not?” he asked coldly.

“Because, like you, I’ve been keeping a secret of my own. Actually, it is more like someone else’s secret. And if I tell you, I am trusting that this stays between us.”

He nodded once, his jaw tense as I inhaled a shaky breath. “I can’t kill him because I’m in love with him. He’s my ex.”

Alessio stared at me blankly for a few moments and I wondered if he had heard me at all.

“Enzo Aiani is your ex-boyfriend?”

“Si. We dated in secret for nearly two years. We only broke up a few weeks ago because he said he was going to marry Elle. He’s a closet gay, Alessio. He won’t accept who he really is and he thinks he has to marry for power and an heir. He’s a good man really, but I guess he is just as messed up as the rest of us.”

Alessio ran his hand down his face as he stared into the distance, disbelief written all over it.

“I can’t fucking believe this. And no one knows?”

“No one,” I repeated. “Look. You need to focus on dealing with one thing at a time. And right now, you need to become Boss officially. Ultimately, you have to protect yourself, Alessio. You have to be in complete control before you can even come back to the North and deal with all this shit. For Elle’s sake. You need to be safe, in order to keep her safe. I promise, she won’t come to any harm while you’re gone.”

“You promised that once before,” he snapped, referring to the reason this all started.

“She won’t leave the house. And if there are any plans that she does, I’ll notify you. How about that?”

“Fine,” he huffed. I stood up and walked over to him. He gave me a small smile, before grabbing my shoulders and pulling me in for a manly hug. “You are one of the only people I trust right now, Finn.”

“Well, that’s just sad,” I chuckled.

“Tell me about it,” he smirked, pulling back from me.

“You sure you don’t want me to tell Elle anything?”

He shook his head slowly. “No, you can't expose yourself. I need you there to keep her safe right now. That is more important than her not hating my fucking guts.”

“Once you tell her the truth Alessio, she will forgive you. I know she will.”

“Let’s just hope it’s not too late,” he nodded to me and walked out of the church. I stayed in the peacefulness of the chapel for another ten minutes, digesting everything that I had just found out. Alessio had always been my ‘brother from another.’ But now, that mysteriousness that always followed him around made me realise how wrong I had been. He had never been distant, closed off or cryptic. He had just been alone. Alone with the world on his shoulders and no one to turn to. And he deserved so much more than to live a life of solitude. He deserved love. And so did Elle.
