“You can shout at me, hate me, fight me all you want, Elle. But I am not going to let you marry him. I would rather die than watch you marry someone else!”

“Then it’s a good job you are not invited to the wedding then!” I shouted in his face as his nostrils flared. The alcohol was giving me all the determination to see this through.

“Enzo is gay!”

Both Alessio and I paused on Finn’s words. Alessio closed his eyes and dropped his head, moving away from me. My eyes connected with Finn as he looked at me with a haunted expression.

“What?”

“Enzo is gay, Elle. Him and I were having a secret relationship for nearly two years. I broke up with him when I heard about his interest in marrying you just to get an heir and save face amongst his men.”

“And you didn’t tell me?” I whispered, staring at Finn with wide eyes.

“I couldn’t. It wasn’t my place to reveal his secret and… I’m in love with him. But I can’t let you go through with this, Elle.”

I covered my face with my hands. Suddenly, a loud knock on the door made us all flinch.

“Elle? Are you in there?” My eyes widened as I stared at Alessio. It was Giovanni. Alessio’s jaw clenched as his hard gaze moved to the door behind me. Panic started to rise. If Alessio was found here alone, Gio would kill him.

“Si. I’ll be out in a minute,” I shouted, trying to keep my voice calm.

“You’ve been in there for a while. Is everything okay? Is Finn in there with you?” He asked as my eyes cast over to my bodyguard.

“Um- yeah. Just felt a bit sick. All the champagne. Yeah, Finn is with me,” I replied.

“Okay. Don’t be long. We are about to start the speeches.”

I exhaled as I heard his footsteps slowly fade down the corridor.

“You have to go. Both of you.” Finn’s eyes filled with sadness as he slowly nodded knowing what that meant. My chest tightened with insufferable pain that I was about to lose my best friend. No matter how much I hated him right now, I couldn’t let Gio kill him when he found out the truth. I turned to open the door, but Alessio slammed it shut again and looked over at Finn.

“Finn, go grab the car,” he threw his keys at him as Finn nodded and turned to the small bathroom window that I realised Alessio must have climbed in through.

Finn gave me one last look and whispered, “I love you, Piccola. I’m sorry,” before climbing out the window. A tear escaped my eyes as I quickly wiped it away and tried for the door again, but Alessio’s foot was firmly wedged in front of it.

“Come with me, Elle.”

“Let me go, Alessio.”

“Never,” he replied as my eyes skimmed over his muscular chest and then up to his face. “I know you don’t trust me. But I know you love me. So I will earn your forgiveness and your trust, Elle. I will never stop fighting for you. All I ask is for you to not marry him. I have a plan to make sure you’re safe from Lorenzo and Galiz. And I need to earn your brother’s respect, I know. Just give me time.”

“It’s impossible,” I shook my head, but he grabbed my chin with his grip, forcing me to look at him.

“I believe anything is possible when you want it that badly,” he whispered, his blue eyes darting between mine full of promises. Promises that I couldn’t allow myself to believe.

“Then you are a fool, Alessio Barbieri.”

He slammed his left hand up against the door in front of my face and my gaze moved to it, my eyes widening when I saw the tattoo of my name, Elle, written on his wedding finger.

“Aren’t we all? Don’t give up on me, Princess.”

He kissed my forehead, as I squeezed my eyes closed to fight the need that lived inside me to just throw everything away and leave with him. When I opened them again, and looked over my shoulder, I caught the last glimpse of him jumping down from the window.

Now what the fuck am I supposed to do?

What A Pair
