I glanced down into her hypnotising eyes as she fluttered her eyelashes up at me. “No love story is perfect, Gio. Ours wasn’t, but when it’s meant to be, it will be. Would you have let anything stop you from being with me?”

“Of course not,” I growled, pulling her into my body tightly and dipping my head into the crook of her neck to bite at her skin. She let out a provocative moan that had my dick straining against my trousers.

“Then don’t be the reason that stops them from having the same thing.”

“You're not playing fair, Bambola,” I husked against her neck as her nails dug into my ass, pushing my hard-on against her.

“All’s fair in love and war,” she giggled, quoting one of her precious English literatures. I lifted my head to stare into her eyes. “Don’t stand in their way, Gio. They have had to overcome enough already.”

“He is here,” I admitted, sighing.

“What?”

“Alessio Barbieri is being tortured in the cellars as we speak.”

“Are you insane?” She hit me hard in the chest, stepping out of my embrace.

“No, I am not insane! Someone had to pay for Finn’s deceit and he put himself forward. I won’t kill him, but he needs to be taught a lesson.”

“Urgh my god!” Liv shouted, running her hands down her face in frustration. “Why is everything a pissing contest with you mafia men? Thank God Finn was around all these years. Think of how many times he protected Elle. You trusted him with her for good reason, Gio. He was brilliant at his job and he loves her! I get you feel betrayed, but what good will torturing Alessio do?”

“He will know to never cross me again,” I growled as she shook her head at me. “Even if I accept he loves Elle and they want to be together, you know I am not the kind of man to let shit go. He has to prove himself to me! And this is just the start!”

“I’m telling Elle!” Liv shouted after me as I walked out the door and headed for the cellars. I knew she would. What she didn’t know is that I had ordered Maximus to start the physical torture as soon as mamma left the cell.

As I entered the narrow passageway underground, I frowned deeply when I didn’t hear a single scream of agony or groan of pain. Storming into the end cell where we were holding him, I froze at the scene before me.

Alessio was still in the stress position, arms chained above his head and his knees were now bleeding against the hard, gritty floor. Blood was pouring from his nose and mouth from brutal beatings and his ribs were purple and black with bruising. Maximus was holding a high voltage taser gun in his hands, which was connected to the pads on Alessio’s chest as his head hung low.

Maximus turned to look at me with a raised eyebrow, “He’s a hard one to crack. He isn’t budging on this marriage thing.”

Alessio lifted his head, realising I had entered the room and smiled, “Giovanni. I wondered when you would join the party.”

I ignored him and grabbed the taser from Maximus’ hand. Crouching down so I was at his level, I held his gaze as I increased the voltage and pressed the button. His eyes scrunched shut and he gritted his teeth as his body shook from the electrical shock, but he didn’t make a sound.

I switched it off as he panted heavily, forcing his eyes back open to stare into mine.

“Just a little tickle,” he breathed with a psychotic smile. I knew at that moment, mamma was right. He would make me kill him before he gave Elle up. I stood up abruptly, pulling the pads off his skin with aggression and threw them down on the table just as Elle, Mamma and Liv came racing into the room.

“Alessio!”

I grabbed my phone off the bed, biting my thumb nail as I contemplated ringing Finn. He probably didn’t even have the same phone anymore, but surely it was worth a try to see if I could speak to Alessio. I had no idea why he still hadn’t made contact with me. I was supposed to be married in twelve hours and he was radio silent. What happened to his big plan? What happened between him and Gio today? Had he changed his mind? Was I no longer worth the hassle?

My stomach flipped when my phone started ringing in my hands, Finn’s caller ID on the screen. What were the chances of that?

“Finn?”

“Elle? Are you okay?”

“Si, why? What’s happened? Are you with Alessio? Can I speak to him?”

There was a short pause. “Elle, that’s why I’m calling. Alessio told me to do nothing, but I can’t just sit around and wait to find out if he is dead or alive because of me.”

My stomach twisted and my chest tightened at the anxiety his words caused. “What do you mean? Why would he be dead?”

“Giovanni has Alessio, Elle. He wanted me, but Alessio refused and gave himself up instead. You have to stop him.”

“Oh dio mio!” I shouted, standing up from my bed. I hung up the phone in panic and tugged open my bedroom door to find my mamma pacing the landing outside. She looked up at me with wide eyes and I knew she knew.
