“Why? You gonna get me a gift?”

“Shiiiid, I been giving you gifts all damn night.”

She giggled. “May thirtieth. I’m a Gemini, like Josephine Baker. I love her.”

“She’s a legend.”

“Yep! What’s yours?”

“November twenty second. Sagittarius.”

“Ew, I hate Sagittarians.”

I chuckled, flipping her over and stretching my body over hers. “So, I take it thatJamaalain’t a Sagittarius, huh?”

“Are you jealous of him? You’re not my man, Vann. Remember all that‘if I fuck you, I won’t be your man’ shit?”

“Nope,” I said, lifting her legs and resting them on my shoulders. Sliding inside her, I added, “and your pussy don’t remember that either.”

“Oh god! So…so what are you saying? You wanna be my man now?”

“Damn, this pussy is good! Uh…I’m saying, don’t be giving my pussy to dudes who don’t know what to do with it.”

She threw her head back, a frown wrinkling her forehead. “Shhhhit!” she cried.

“Exactly.”

We fucked ourselves into exhaustion that night, and when the sun rose, I fed her breakfast and took her back to campus.

CHAPTER13

BROOKLYN

NOW…

“…last bit of business. Homecoming is in a little over a week and as you all know, our department is hosting a silent auction gala on that Sunday night as the opening alumni event. I want to thank all of you for doing an awesome job selling tickets and tables. We’re all sold out!” Sharla announced, garnering applause from the African American Studies department faculty and staff. This was a special meeting in addition to the regularly scheduled staff meetings and as I took notes, I had to admit I was truly proud of my friend. She was commanding but kind. A real boss.

“If you’ve been able to secure donated items for the auction and have not already, please submit that information to Brooklyn. Thank you to those who have already done so, especially Dr. Rancifer, who is donating a full set of his AAVE dictionaries. I’m still working on the entertainment but if I’m able to pull this off, everyone will have a great time!” Sharla said in conclusion.

As everyone filed out of the conference room, I wrapped up my notes and waited until we were alone for Sharla to confer with me as she usually did. A month into this new job and I already had the rhythm of everything down. Maybe that secretarial course I’d taken after college had actually been a good idea. Sure, I only took it in case I got a job working for a rich CEO who would find me irresistible and make me his wife. Of course, that didn’t happen. I met Isaac while working the perfume counter at Gabon’s, a local luxury department store. He was buying a gift for his girlfriend, and he found me irresistible. It didn’t take long for him to replace that girlfriend with me, and I thought I had it made.

Ididhave it made.

Shit, I needed to think about something else.

“All right, I know you got everything down.” Sharla’s voice pulled me back into the room with her.

“I did. I’m going to spend the evening organizing the donations and making bid sheets for them if you don’t have anything else for me to do. Oh, and I updated the calendar that’s shared with the faculty and staff to show you being off the Friday of homecoming week.”

She smiled. “Damn, you’re good. So efficient. I love that I hired you.”

I rolled my eyes. “You’re acting all surprised, but you know I was a beast at organizing stuff like this when I was active in all those organizations.”

“That’s true, and that’s probably why every other meeting, folks lament your absence. You should come back.”

Shaking my head, I fixed my eyes on my notepad. “That was a whole other life. I’m building a new one now. Plus, I don’t have the time or the money. I’m having to repeat a dress for this event.”

“And I’m sure you’ll outshine all the rest of us in that repeat dress. You wearing that red one? That dress was a stunner!”
