“I’ll do whatever I want to do,” I snapped.

“What’s going on? Did something happen at the party? Why would she quit?”

“Because Don is a predator who has ‘sexual harassment suit’ written all over him. He needs to go.”

“Shit.” Ben ran a hand across his face. “Was it that bad?”

“Yes. And I just stood there and let him say it because I’m a fucking coward. He needs to go. Now.”

Ben raised his hand. “Alright, chill out. We can make a report.”

“I’m serious. I’m done working with that asshole. I’m done working with all these assholes.”

“That’s a little harsh.”

At that moment, red hair against an icy blue coat emerged and my attention completely shifted. Without saying anything to Ben, I whipped open my door and tore across the office.Rounding the corner, I snapped my head around before zeroing in on her desk.

“I need to talk to her,” I seethed, trying—and failing—to control my desperation.

“Good morning to you too, Nathan,” Lila said sweetly. “It’s funny, I don’t think you’ve ever stopped by my desk before.”

“Stop playing coy. I know you know everything. And I know you probably know what happened last night. I need to speak with Charlie.”

“That’s not up to me.” She shrugged and smiled, but I could see daggers behind her eyes.

I crouched down so I was at eye level with her. “Please, Lila. I’m begging you. She won’t answer my calls. I tried going to her place last night but she wasn’t there.”

Her eyes softened a little. “Look, she’s hurt and she doesn’t want to talk to you,” she whispered. “You made her feel like she didn’t matter.”

“I had no choice.”

She shook her head. “Come on now. We always have a choice.”

“She knows why I did it.”

“Doesn’t make it any better.”

“Lila—”

“Look, I’m not Charlie. I can’t help you. If she wants to talk to you, she will. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have an email to write my boss.”

With that, she turned back to her laptop and pretended like I wasn’t still standing there. I backed away in disbelief. Was there truly nothing I could do?

I went back to my office and grabbed my coat. Ben still hovered there. “Are you leaving?”

“Just tell everyone I’m too hungover from the holiday party. I’m sure half the employees there last night will be calling in sick.”

“Nathan, you can’t just leave work. This isn’t like you.”

I brushed past him without another word.

I arrivedat Oliver’s house after stopping by Charlie’s again. This time, the neighbor was leaving when I arrived and had shot me a death glare. “She just left,” she’d said.

Slamming the door to the house, I flung my stuff down before pulling my phone out again to text her.

Nathan: I’m sorry, can we just talk?

Nathan: I’m coming over.
