“Good. I’ll see you at the next meeting then.”

With a nod, he stood and moved to the door.

“So much for the subtle pleasantries of getting to know your employees,” I muttered under my breath as he left the room.

“What was that?” he asked, grabbing the doorframe and swinging his head back into the room.

“Nothing,” I squeaked.

He narrowed his eyes and tilted his head before disappearing again.

I blew out a breath and slumped against my chair. That was a close one. I needed to learn when to keep my big mouth shut.

Left to process my thoughts, I didn’t vacate the conference room right away. Had that meeting gone well or had it gone horribly? And what did it say about me that I couldn’t tell?

He had been short and to the point. At times it felt like my competence surprised him, but at least I got the feeling he thought my work was adequate. Or could his conciseness mean he was somehow checked out on this project and didn’t care if I failed?

That wouldn’t make sense. I didn’t know much about Nathan, but I was positive he didn’t take failure lightly. His entire persona reeked of overachiever. He’d more than likely been successful at everything he'd ever tried.

“What are you doing in here alone?”

My thoughts had wandered so far that I didn’t even notice Lila hovering by the door. She sat down in the chair Nathan had vacated.

“I had a meeting with Nathan.”

“And? Does he hate you? Are you fired?”

“I don’t know.”

She dipped her chin. “You don’t know if you’re fired?”

“I don’t know if he hates me. The whole meeting lasted less than ten minutes and he hardly said anything.”

“He seems like the quiet type. I wouldn’t take it personally,” she said, brushing off my concerns.

“It was hard to tell if he even liked my ideas. He had no feedback.”

“That’s good, right?”

“I guess? It was just weird.”

“Well, stop worrying about him. We’ll be out of here soon enough.”

My new resolution danced in my mouth, trying to get out, but I held it in. I would never talk about our side business—orplans to resign—in the office. Neither of us would. I’d tell her in private, and then we would come up with a plan.

“Coffee shop tonight?” I asked.

“I was actually thinking we should take the night off,” she said.

“Seriously? And do what?”

“There’s a company happy hour. We should go.”

I groaned. “Mingling with coworkers that we already see every day? That’s your idea of a night off?”

“What? It’s free booze and you can finally flirt with Liam.”

“Lila,” I hissed. “I am not flirting with Liam.”
