She gave me a thumbs up and mouthed, “You got this.”

Sometimes I hated her optimism.

“The contractors caughtthis error yesterday. It seems when someone enters their favorite book quote, it shows up in a previous Pulse section…” I cleared my throat, my face turning red as I had to read the next line. “Your favorite sex position.”

Nathan smirked at my flustered demeanor. I hated how at ease he seemed. Did the man ever get ruffled? That I’d pay to see. At least this meeting was going as well as could be expected. Of course, I was a blubbering mess compared to my usual composed self, but I had managed to make it past the twenty-minute mark without bringing up yesterday. Although, I still felt compelled to mention it. Wasn’t it even weirder to pretend it had never happened? I had resolved to apologize at the end of the meeting. That way, as soon as I got out the words, I could hightail it out of there.

“Your favorite sex positionis a favorite question amongst our users,” Nathan said.

“Probably just the men,” I muttered. “The operations team decided to nix it along withyour favorite body part.”

“I suppose that’s for the best.” He scrolled around on his laptop, looking over the file I sent him. “It looks like they duplicated the code for the book quote question and didn’t clean it up. Have a developer go in and look at it. Should be an easy enough fix.”

“I’ll get right on that.”

“Is there anything else?”

“Nothing major right now. We’re ahead of schedule if you can believe it,” I said.

“I can. Your timeline was flawless and you’re a great leader. I wish we had you back when we first started the company.”

I took a sip of coffee to hide my blush. It backfired, though. In my haste, the hot liquid went down the wrong pipe, and I started to choke violently.

“Are you alright?” Nathan asked, getting up from his seat.

“Fine,” I wheezed, waving my hands to indicate he should stay put. Grabbing my coffee again, I took another swig to try to quell the coughing fit.

Nathan eyed me. “If there isn’t anything else, I suppose we can call it a few minutes early.”

“Wait,” I said. It came out too panicked, and I tried to adjust my face into a more neutral expression. My heart beat heavily against my chest.

Just get it out. It will be over soon.

“I’m sorry about last night,” I blurted out.

Nathan’s eyebrows shot up. He met my eyes for what felt like the first time today. “Charlie…that isn’t necessary. You have nothing to be sorry for.”

“I shouldn’t have come onto you last night.” My words tumbled out faster than I had ever spoken. “I’m so embarrassed.”

His jaw tensed as his gaze intensified. “You have nothing to be embarrassed of.”

The fierceness in his tone caught me off guard. All I could do was nod in response.

“I’ll see you later,” he said, before standing and walking toward the door.

As I watched him walk away, I tried to shift my focus to work. Either Nathan was understanding of my misstep last night, or he was even more unbothered than I gave him credit for. I honestly wasn’t sure which one it was, I just knew for certain I couldn’t afford to make another mistake with him.

“Working late again?”

I looked up to see Liam leaning against my desk. He looked cute in a teal shirt that brought out the green in his eyes.

“I could say the same about you,” I said, glancing at the clock and seeing that it was already past six.

The past couple of weeks had flown by. Work had been intense as we were closer to wrapping up this integration, and any free time I had was spent at events with Lila or working on the operations of our business. In fact, I had to leave any minute now for a wine and cheese night for ConnectHer.

Liam stretched, his muscles flexing in the process. It almost seemed like he was doing it on purpose.

“Maybe I work late because I know it’s the only way I’ll be able to talk to you for a few minutes on my way out.”
