Brian looked between Nathan and me, eyes wide. Good. Let him jump to conclusions.

“This is my girlfriend, Sam,” Brian continued. “Sam. Charlie.”

Sam forced a smile and nodded. “I've heard a lot about you.”

I cringed at her tone. Likely not good things. I'm sure Brian complained about how I didn't have my priorities straight and that I didn't have time for him.

“Hi.” I gave her a half-hearted wave, dying for this conversation to be over.

Brian cleared his throat, lingering despite his new girlfriend already retreating a few steps behind him.

“And this is...” He trailed off looking at Nathan.

“Nathan Shaw,” Nathan said, his voice much deeper than Brian’s.

Brian gulped and nodded. “Is this your new...”

I rolled my eyes as he danced around the question. While technically I had been the one to end things between the two of us because of his lack of support, it wasn't as if he was all that heartbroken about it. He probably just felt inferior seeing me with someone as attractive as Nathan.

“Nathan is here with me to test out the class for ConnectHer.”

“Oh.” He raised his eyebrows. “You're still doing that?” He asked the question as if he didn't already know the answer. I knew he watched all of our social stories.

“I'll meet you outside,” Sam muttered before excusing herself.

I wished Brian would follow her lead. I smiled sweetly. “Yes, we've almost tripled our size.”

“Wow, that's shocking.”

The hairs on the back of my neck bristled at his all too familiar tone.

“It’s not shocking, Brian. Lila and I work our asses off.”

“Right.” He chuckled. “No one knows that better than me. I’m just surprised your little hobby is getting bigger. Seemed like it was already maxed out when we were together.”

“Actually, given the impressive business model and the market opportunity, they will likely grow a lot more than that,” Nathan's cold voice chimed in.

I glanced over at him, smiling in appreciation.

“Sure.” Brian didn't look convinced. “I guess I should get going. Good seeing you, Charlie.”

“You too,” I lied.

He retreated, and I let out a sigh of relief. I opened my hands that I hadn’t even realized had been balled into fists.

“Your ex I presume?” Nathan asked now that it was just the two of us.

“The one and only,” I muttered.

“Seems like a winner.”

Despite Brian putting a damper on my mood, a smile formed on my lips. “Wow, I didn’t realize Nathan Shaw did sarcasm.”

We locked eyes. I really couldn’t take the way he looked at me sometimes.

“I can see why things didn’t work out. He’s an idiot for not believing in you.”

I bit my lip. “That’s nice of you to say.”
