“See, that’s what I don’t get. He’s so encouraging and vulnerable with you one day, and then he’s back to Mr. Robot as soon as he sees you in the office.” She shook her head. “So weird.”

“I can’t wait to explore these weird vibes for twenty-four uninterrupted hours.” My voice dripped with sarcasm.

“I can’t wait to hear every detail.”

“As much as my overactive imagination would love for something to happen, I’m sure he will be the picture of professionalism. We’ll present, then head to our separate rooms, I’ll order takeout, we’ll fly back, end of story.”

She snorted. “God, could you have thought of a more boring fantasy?”

“It’s not a fantasy, it’s reality.”

“Fine,” she huffed. “If Nathan is a no-go, at least you still have Liam. He’s been making puppy dog eyes at you even more than usual lately.”

“I really should give him a chance, shouldn’t I?”

“Might help quell those raging hormones.” Lila elbowed me in the side and winked.

I can't believeI let myself get talked into this. Leaving for the night—alone with Nathan. So what if it was for business. How was I supposed to keep my brain from thinking of things that were less than professional? Now, as I stood on the tarmac for the private jet, I wished I had made different decisions.

"Ready to go?" Nathan's deep voice caused me to jump.

"Yep," I said.

He gestured for me to climb the stairs. "Ladies first."

I smiled, trying to hide my nerves. "This is exciting. I've never been on a private plane before."

His frown deepened. "You know, statistically we are much more likely to crash in a plane this small."

My breath hitched. The entire cab ride over, Nathan had been quiet. We met at the office this morning, and I had tried my best to get us off to a fresh, professional start. I even brought him a cup of coffee. He barely grunted athankswhen I handed it to him.

"Well, aren't you full of fun facts this morning." I forced a laugh, but I eyed the plane wearily. I didn't think I had a phobia of small aircrafts, but now that he mentioned it, was this thing actually safe?

"Are you going to get on?" he asked, checking the time on his watch.

I urged my body to take a step forward before letting out a huff of frustration. "You didn't exactly make it sound inviting."

"Oh," he said, raising his eyebrows. "Sorry, I don't know why I said that. It's safe, Charlie. Get on. Trust me, I've done this dozens of times."

"This is how the other half lives, huh?" I muttered, finally taking the steps up to the door.

A flight attendant greeted me.

"I'll take that." She reached for my laptop bag.

"Oh, that's okay." I offered her a cheery smile. "I've got it."

She smiled back and gave me a tight nod before turning to Nathan. She took his briefcase and coat without any protest.

I stepped farther into the plane and took a look around. It was larger than I'd expected. Ten plush chairs were arranged around the craft. A large flat-screen television adorned one of the walls, and a fully stocked bar was located in the front corner.

"Where should we sit?" I asked, still awkwardly standing at the front of the plane.

"Wherever you want," he said. "We can sit over there if you like."

He pointed to the two seats closest to a window. I nodded and took a step. The tip of my shoe got caught on the edge of a chair and I stumbled forward. Nathan—somehow faster than gravity—reached out and grabbed my arm.

"Thanks," I breathed.
