“If you think I’ve stopped thinking about that night for one second, you’re wrong. It keeps me up at night.”

“I only said we should forget about it because I couldn’t bear to hear you say it,” I admitted.

“Well, it wasn’t fun hearing you say it either.”

He finally closed the distance between us and kissed me. I reached up, tangling my fingers in his hair and allowing myself to get lost in his lips. He cupped my face in both of his hands and held on as if he was scared I’d disappear.

There was still one question I feared the answer to. “So what does this mean?”

“I’m not quite sure,” he said, tucking a piece of my hair behind my ear. “I’ve never done this before. But what I do know is that I want to spend all my free time with you, and I never want you to go out with Liam again.”

I laughed. “I think I can manage that. And work?”

“I still need to figure that out. But outside of work, you’re all mine. And I’m all yours.”

With that, he kissed me again.

Chapter Twenty-Five

NATHAN

I staredout through my open office door, willing Charlie to look up from her computer. When she finally did, she glanced around to make sure there were no witnesses before winking and flashing me a secret smile.

This past week after our talk—the one where I crashed her date and proclaimed my feelings for her—had been the best in memory. I couldn’t get enough of her and she seemed to echo the sentiment. By this point, we had our routine down. After work, we’d leave in shifts. Her first, and then I’d follow shortly after. Since we both stayed later than almost everyone in the office, we had minimal risk of being noticed. Then we’d meet up a few blocks away to go to dinner—or sometimes right back to her place.

Occasionally we’d both work on the couch together. Me finishing up the final details before this launch and her working on ConnectHer. Her commitment to the company she’d started only deepened my feelings for her. Most people didn’t understand the hustle of doing something all on your own, or the elation of finally hitting a milestone knowing it was all because of the work you put in. But we both did.

I had never felt so content.

Liam walked by Charlie’s desk and ducked his head to avoid talking to her. Smirking, I watched in approval as he continued to retreat away from her. She had told me the other day she’d tried to let him down easy, but he had seemed pretty offended by the whole ordeal. Apparently, he had thought their date was a real love connection. If only he’d known who she ended up in bed with just hours later.

Ben appeared in my doorway. He jerked his gaze back at Charlie before returning it to me, studying me.

“Stop making those googly eyes,” he hissed. “You’re being obvious.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I returned my focus to the line of code I needed to review and approve.

He sighed and stepped in, closing the door behind him. “You’re playing with fire. I know you. I see how you’ve changed. There’s definitely something going on between the two of you.”

Ignoring him, I remained focused on my laptop screen. After speaking with my lawyer, it turned out there wasn’t a whole lot I could do about my current predicament. The wording couldn’t be clearer or more ironclad. While there wasn’t anything illegal about Charlie and me, the board could decide to strip me of my position with no questions asked.

“You know the policy,” Ben snapped, reaching out and shutting my laptop.

I retracted my fingers and glared at him. “Shouldn’t you be the last person lecturing me about sleeping with someone from work?”

Ben’s wife, Skylar, was once his assistant.

“That’s different. Our company didn’t have these strict policies. I wasn’t risking anything.”

“Just your reputation,” I muttered.

“Excuse me.” He shot me a warning glare. “If anything, Sky improved my reputation. And I am not the one on trial here.”

“I’m not on trial either.”

“Not yet.” He ran his hand over his face and paced around my small office. “And thank god for that. I can’t lose you around here, Nathan.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”
