We had won.

We had survived the trials and tribulations, outlasting all the other competitors, and emerged victorious.

But wait…

Did the voice say champions,plural?

“We hope you had a great time,” the voice said. “Hopefully we’ll get to see you again sometime — at the reunion!”

The floor of my pod began to shift, a hole opening up.

I leapt to one side and pressed my ass to the glass. “Wait! What happened to Talan? Hello? What happened to Talan?”

The hole consumed the entire pod floor and there wasn’t so much as a ledge to balance on.

I fell through it and slid down a long, dark tunnel.

* * *

I fell faster and faster, gathering up so much speed that it terrified me.

Was this what they did to their Champions? I wondered.

Use them up and then dispose of them?

Were we even going to beallowedto leave?

The pipe leveled out but my speed was so intense that I was still sliding even after a minute of the flat surface.

I just lay there, staring at the ceiling, my breaths panting and coming heavy.

I slowly sat up and found myself in another huge dark room.

It was a far cry from the colorful platforms they had designed for us.

Occasionally, there was a loud thumping noise as something somewhere was dropped and it hit the floor.

Then I heard footsteps.

I hadn’t yet emerged from my pipe so I knew they weren’t mine.

I looked off into the darkness in the rough direction they had come from.

“H-Hello?” I said. “I-Is someone there?”

I immediately shook my head at my own idiocy.

I had been kidnapped and put into a terrible, evil game, forced to kill and run and mate… and now I was in a dark room of shadows with a stranger and I was asking it to come toward me?

Was I insane?

But a figure did approach and it shuffled into the weak light above my pipe.

The figure was big and tall, with powerfully built muscular shoulders and gleaming golden eyes that I could pick out from the darkness long before his full frame came into view.

“Talan?”

His name was on my lips before he had even completely emerged from the darkness.
