There’s a strange sensation that comes with being carried by an alien through an unknown undergrowth.

It’s a mix of fear, confusion, and a peculiar form of excitement.

As Talan’s large, surprisingly gentle hand clamped over my mouth to keep me silent, and his warm breath fanned the side of my face, I struggled to separate those emotions.

When he felt I was sufficiently calm (or as calm as one can be when kidnapped by aliens), he released me.

I stumbled slightly on the foreign ground but caught myself against a bioluminescent fern, its gentle glow illuminating my surroundings just enough for me to see.

“Do you know about the Malquarans?” he asked.

“Malquarans? Aren’t they the new family that moved in down the street?”

My attempt at humor only made Talan cock his head to one side.

“No,” I said flatly. “I don’t know the Malquarans.”

“Then you are fortunate.” He sat on a large upturned boulder. “They abducted us to use in one of their twisted forms of entertainment. They’ve taken us both, and now we’re part of their newest reality gameshow.”

I froze. “Awhat?”

“A gameshow. It’s called the Mating Games.”

The blood fell from my face, and I felt like my knees were going to give way.

I fell onto a rock beside his and hung my head in my hands.

The Mating Games.

Why did I already now hold out much hope? “Go on.”

“We must fight to survive.”

My heart sank. “So, we’re… what? Pawns in a cosmic game of Survivor?”

“I do not know this ‘Survivor,’ but survival is the name of the game.” He leaned in even closer, his lips brushing my ear. “But it’s not just any game. This is the Malquarans’ most watched, mostviciousone.”

I tried to process his words, my brain refusing to believe the absurdity of the situation.

I’d been abducted for an… alien reality TV show? “So, what are the rules?” I whispered, trying to wrap my head around our predicament.

Talan paused, tuning into the sounds of the alien forest.

Every rustle and chirp seemed louder in the stillness of the moment. “The rules? Number one, stay alive.”

The way he said it sent a chill down my spine.

It was clear this wasn’t going to be a walk in the park.

The humming, buzzing, and chirping of the surrounding flora and fauna created an eerie soundtrack to our whispered conversation.

My earlier fleeting excitement was rapidly being replaced by rising panic.

“But how do we do that? And how do we get out of here?” I questioned, trying to maintain my composure.

Talan looked at me, a mixture of determination and tenderness in his eyes. “The way out is for one of the alien males to Claim you—”

Suddenly, he stiffened, his ears twitching.
