But in the eerie silence of the alien wilderness, the gravity of the situation weighed heavily on me.

Did I really want to do this?

Be the bait in a trap?

The only alternative was to be mated by one of the alien males.

But even with that, I could choose.

Talan was handcuffed to me at all times and surely he would be softer and more gentle than any of the other beasts…?

The very idea made my cheeks burn.

I mean, it was a way to ensure safety, wasn’t it?

And, admittedly, while Talan was, in his own unique way, very attractive, was I truly considering this alternative?

Not out of any genuine feeling, but out of fear?

I shook my head, dismissing the thought as quickly as it had surfaced.

This wasn’t the time for such contemplations.

Besides, we had a plan, one that didn’t involve crossing lines I wasn’t ready to cross.

But a nagging voice at the back of my mind continued to pose the question — was this thesaferoption?

I glanced toward Talan’s hidden form, seeking assurance, and was met with his unwavering gaze once more.

Taking a deep breath, I prepared myself.

My throat felt dry, but I had to make as much noise as possible.

Trying to imagine myself in a different place, perhaps in the shower back home, I let out a scream.

The sound echoed in the vast expanse, filling the stillness of the evening.

Immediately, I felt self-conscious.

Was that scream loud enough?

Too dramatic?

Did I sounddistressedenough?

The last thing I wanted was for my act to fall flat, especially when so much was at stake.

I tried to remind myself that this wasn’t about pride or performance.

It was aboutsurvival.

For a moment, there was utter silence, save for the distant trill of an alien bird.

The suspense was palpable, and doubt gnawed at me.

What if a creature didn’t come?

What if they were smart enough to see through our ruse?
