“That’s what makes him dangerous,” Talan said, his voice soft but firm. “But we have each other. And together, we’ve faced every challenge this Game has thrown at us.”

He was right.

But still, an icy thread of apprehension wove its way through my thoughts.

This wasn’t just another round, another alien.

This wasKrexar.

And he was proving to be our most formidable opponent yet.

As the pods prepared for another launch, their mechanisms humming to life, I pressed my palm against the cold, transparent partition separating us from Krexar.

Our eyes locked. His, a penetrating gaze filled with predatory anticipation; mine, a steely promise of defiance.

I could almost hear his thoughts, taunting me, challenging me.

But the fierce determination swelling within left no room for doubt or fear.

I wouldn’t let this creature, this monster, harm Talan.

I won’t let him win.

The final jolt of the pod’s preparation snapped me back to the present, and I clung to Talan, my protector, my partner, my beacon in this chaotic nightmare.

But as I looked at him, our roles reversed in that moment.

It wasIwho was determined to shieldhim,to ensure his safety.

It was me that had put us in this situation.

It was me that had taken the Plan B route and forced Talan to fight for our survival.

But now I had to make a choice.

Either let Krexar butcher Talan and Claim me, or let Talan Claim me himself.

The decision, this time, was easy.

As the pods were once again launched into the unknown, I held on to that decision, etching it deep within my heart, ready to do whatever was necessary to win.

Whateverwas necessary.

The pod made a crunching sound as it hit the ground, the jarring impact sending tremors through my body.

My eyes darting over to Talan, who seemed lost in thought.

“Are you okay?” I asked, my voice filled with concern.

Talan looked up, his eyes brimming with anguish. “I’m supposed to be your protector, Riley. But Krexar… he’s not just another adversary. I’m not sure I can protect you from him.”

The vulnerability in his voice caught me off guard.

It was so rare to see this side of Talan.

The Talan I knew was always the calm, resourceful, and self-assured alien.
