Riley pulled back, blood smeared around her lips.

She grinned with her own maniacal beam now and laughed.

Tears streamed from her eyes and peeled down her cheeks.

At first, I thought it was from the sudden turn of events, but as her face curled up with pain, I realized the venom was taking its effect on her.

Her body shook and convulsed as it took her small, more fragile form.

And yet again, I watched as the light of her lifeforce faded from her eyes.

I had lost count the number of times I’d had to watch her die and every time, it tore my heart from my chest.

Krexar scowled as if this had been part of some ploy. “This will not save you,” he said. “The poison will still claim you.”

I nodded. “But it still gives us time. And while we have time, we have hope.”

Krexar’s expression curled into disgust. “Then you are a fool.”

“A fool does not feel the love of his fated mate.”

My words surprised Krexar but if I thought it would be enough to prevent him from launching another vicious attack in the next round, I was to be sorely mistaken.

The green mist came fast and I shut my eyes and let it envelop me.

Soon, I would be reunited with Riley.

Soon, I would be in her arms again.

And soon, death would replace her.

“Ten...”

I awoke with a searing pain radiating from my side.

It felt like hot tendrils of fire were crawling just beneath my skin.

It was agonizing, each heartbeat pulsing the toxin deeper into my system.

My limbs were heavy, my thoughts sluggish.

Every movement felt like I was trudging through thick, unforgiving mud.

Across the aisle, Krexar was pacing inside his pod, his eyes fixated on us.

The way he seethed and glared, it was evident he considered us mere irritants now, gnats that he needed to swat away to claim his prize.

His aggression was palpable.

The way he clenched his fists, the forceful rhythm of his steps, everything about him exuded a desire to finish what he had started.

Despite my groggy state, I was painfully aware of the situation.

The odds were far from in our favor.

I was injured, weakening by the second, and Riley was devastated, barely holding back her tears.
