The very one that had narrowly missed us earlier was approaching.

Its heavy footsteps grew louder and more distinct with each passing second.

Krexar pulled away slightly, his grip on my face still firm. “Not the reaction I was hoping for,” he murmured, his voice dripping with disappointment. “But no matter. I can be patient.”

I met his gaze defiantly, gathering all my remaining strength. “I will never willingly give in to you, Krexar. You can’t break me.”

A cruel smile spread across Krexar’s face. “We’ll see about that.”

The ground shook slightly with each step the creature took, its presence drawing nearer.

An idea began to form in my mind.

It was risky, very risky, but it might be the only way to save Talan and myself.

Using the little strength I had left, I pushed Krexar away from me and screamed.

The sound echoed through the dense foliage, piercing the otherwise still air.

Krexar looked at me, startled and slightly amused. “A tantrum won’t help you now, little one.”

But I wasn’t throwing a tantrum.

The thudding grew louder, more intense.

The creature was getting closer.

Krexar’s confident demeanor began to waver as he too heard the nearing threat.

He glanced around nervously, realizing that my scream wasn’t just a defiant act but a call to the beast.

Krexar, now fully aware of the imminent danger, backed away from us. “What is this? Another one of your useless traps? Or just a trick?”

But beneath that anger, I could detect a hint of fear.

The thudding was now deafening, the vibrations from the creature’s steps jarring.

I held Talan tighter, bracing ourselves for the impending confrontation.

Talan

The world seemed to blur and warp around me.

The edges of my vision dimmed, the centerpiece being Riley and the looming, menacing shadow of Krexar.

The poison that coursed through my veins held me hostage in my own body.

My limbs felt weighted, my mind foggy, yet the pain in my heart was sharp and clear.

This was my worst nightmare.

I tried to push through, to summon strength from places I didn’t even know existed within me.

I needed to defend Riley, to rip Krexar away from her.

Every inch of me screamed in protest and agony, the poison’s grip tightening.

But the fire in me, the primal need to protect, urged me forward.
