“Then you probably can’t understand the pressures of living up to the golden child older brother,” I say, trying unsuccessfully to keep the bitterness from my voice at the mention of Luke.

The kayak stops at the sandy shore, and I stick my foot out to drag it over the coastline, ensuring we don’t drift away.

“Are we staying here?” Stella asks, eying the water again to look for the lost rowboat, but they are nowhere in sight.

“It’s as good a place as any to watch the sunset, don’t you think?”

Without a word, she climbs out of the kayak and joins me on the shore, but before she can sit on the sandy beach, I strip off my shirt and lay it down, so she won’t get dirty. We sit together, squished on the scrap of material.

The sun starts to set beyond the diamond dipped lake.

“You’re a gentleman when you want to be, huh?” she quips lightly.

“I’m always a gentleman,” I counter, mildly offended, and she appears to sense my sourness.

Her hand touches my arm, and I stiffen, unaccustomed to displays of affection.

“I didn’t mean anything by it,” she says gently.

“You’re making a jibe at me for being late today,” I retort.

“Am I? Or are you feeling a little guilty about that?”

I catch her soulful dark eyes in the fading summer light, and my pulse quickens.

She’s calling me on my shit, and I want to kiss her. Hell, I’m going to kiss her.

I lean in closer, waiting for her to back away, to show she isn’t interested, but her lips remain exactly on par with mine.

“I’m sorry I was so late today,” I rasp, my breath teasing her face.

Her hand cups my cheek. “I forgive you.”

Our lips meld together, and her other hand cups my other cheek, drawing me closer as our mouths part. Tongues tease one another, sparks of electricity shooting through me, and I set her back fully on my shirt, straddling her slender form, still encased in the life vest. She doesn’t protest any of my movements, her hands reaching up to encircle my head tenderly, drawing me closer.

CHAPTER 8

Stella

Idon’t question what’s happening as his lips trail over the lines of my throat, Gabe’s fingers fumbling for the straps of my life vest. The straps fall away, exposing the lime green bikini underneath, the flotation device falling away entirely to show off my heaving form.

“Wow,” I pant, shocked by this unexpected turn of events, the urgency in Gabe’s kisses only making me headier as twilight falls over the lake. My hands curl into the thick of his hair, guiding his head lower along my chin. His breaths grow hotter, his hands splaying over my hardened nipples as he presses himself to me.

Is this why he’s snuck me away? To have his way with me?

His head drops lower, nuzzling between my breasts, and my knees raise as he uses his nose to nudge away the material of my bra. Gooseflesh erupts to prickle my skin, every touch of his fingers, the slightest hint of wind making me friskier.

A rush of heat spurts through my legs, arching my body toward him, encouraging his mouth to cup along the hardness of my nipples as my legs wrap around his waist.

“You are delicious,” Gabe mumbles, and my eyes close, tipping my head back.

More gooseflesh breaks out over me, my body again arching upward, Gabe’s nose diving into the spot between my breasts as my fingers dig into the muscles of his shoulders.

One hand cups my right breast as his tongue laps out to sample the other, and a moan echoes across the beach. I realize it’s my voice calling out in the melting twilight.

“Shh,” he mumbles. “Don’t let them find us.”

I bite on my lower lip so hard, I’m surprised I don’t draw blood, but euphoria overtakes any other sense.
