“It’s okay. Mummy is okay, I just need a hug.” I shudder.

“Mummy needs pizza and ice cream?” She twiddles with my hair and kisses my shoulder. Her voice wavers, and I know it’s because I'm sad and she doesn’t like it.

“I definitely do. Shall we order some?” I whisper, quickly wiping my tears away on my sleeve. She nods into my neck, and I spend the evening making it all about her. I don’t want her to see me upset or feel she must comfort me. That’s my job.

“This is where the horsey prince lives. His name is Marbullous Marvin.” Beau giggles, moving her horse along thefloor. I swallow my laugh at her attempt at saying marvellous and grin with feigned excitement.

“So where does my horse live?” I ask her, going to a stable.

“Not that one, the nasty frog man lives there.” Beau frowns at me. “He is slimy and eats their food. The prince fights him.”

“Sounds very scary,” I murmur and follow her finger when she points to another stable we made out of old cardboard and Sellotape.

“Marvin will win. YoYo can sleep here.”

My phone pings, and I check to see if it’s Dan. I messaged after I left to see if Cameron was okay. I had to know if he had calmed down.

Hi, I'm sorry about what happened. I want us to be friends. Marcus x

Groaning,I turn my phone over and continue playing with Beau and her toys. He can wait until I'm ready. I'm still not happy with him. It took two weeks to win my mother over and the only thing that made her change her tune was hearing Beau ask why she was being unkind. I hadn’t expected her to come out with it. When my mother questioned me, I begrudgingly admitted that I found her to be mean, and I usually agreed to save myself the argument with her. She’s never been an easy person to approach, and her ideals aren’t like my own. I'm hoping that she finally accepts what I want.

“Mummy, YoYo needs to go in her stable.” Beau sighs, clearly annoyed with me for not paying attention.

“And so does Beau!” I laugh, tickling her side.

I haven’t seenCameron or Dan for a few days, and when I mention it to Emily, she refers to a voicemail she received over the weekend. I haven’t confessed to her or anyone else about the conversation that happened between Cameron, Nadine, and I.

“It’s really awkward,” she confesses on a hush, checking over her shoulder to make sure no one is at the counter, then adds, “Dan has been hitting up my phone, calls, texts.” He could have replied to me, the cheeky bugger!

“He’s into you.” It’s obvious.

“I can’t give him more,” she murmurs and starts wiping the side. This is a touchy subject for her. She has feelings for him, I see that now, and she is scared he will only hurt her like her ex.

“Maybe you should tell him that. He’ll appreciate your honesty.”

“Well, I did.” She laughs nervously. “Then my phone starts ringing. It’s Dan,” she tells me, panicked, “and I didn’t dare pick it up. It went to voicemail, and I forgot to change it. Wes and I are on it.”

“Ah.”

“No shit.” She laughs again. “I get this voicemail and it's Cam ranting about who Wes is, then Dan is yelling at him and that’s it.” She shrugs.

“Wait, no more texts or calls?” I wonder.

“Nope.” Shaking her head, Emily grabs a brownie and eats it. “Not a thing,” she mumbles, annoyed.

“So you wanted him to contact you?”

“Well, duh, yeah, he is like…” She stares at me, wide-eyed. “Come on, Dan isfuckinghot.”

“But you told him you’re not interested?”

“I don't want to be. Wes and I never had that kind of chemistry, and I want more of that, but I'm scared to dip my toe in the dating pool. Scared because I like him.” Her confession is uttered with a deep blush rolling over her cheeks.

“Why don't you have fun and see where it goes?”

“I'm not sure I'm the fun type.” She wrinkles her nose. “I get too caught up.”

“I think after the other night, Dan thinks you’re the fun type,” I tell her, and she drops her head in her hands, groaning loudly.
