I sighed.

“Are you okay?” Jacob asked. For some reason, the fact that he still looked oddly amused didn’t bother me. It was more the fact that my stomach kept doing flips because he kept looking at me like that.

Like he cared.

Like he was happy to see me.

Slowly, I nodded, though I felt a bit dizzy.

“Do you want me to help get you home? I promise. I’ve been told I’m a funny guy but there will be no funny business.”

“I…” Just a second ago I was so ready to go home and get away from everything from the night. I felt funny and a little drunk and then after what happened with Brian—only now, I didn’t want to return to campus and my tiny closet of a single bedroom where I’d get ready for bed and likely be unable to fall asleep for hours. Alone.

“Do you not want to go home?” Jacob asked, raising his eyebrows.

“No. That’s not it. Or maybe…” I glanced towards my feet. They hurt in these stupid shoes.

“Are you hungry?”

My eyes snapped back up. “What?”

“I asked if you were hungry,” repeated Jacob. He waited.

“Um,” I nodded, unsure what I was doing, but clearly not in my right mind. “I guess so.”

“Let’s go somewhere then. I promise. It’ll be safe.”

“You could be lying. You could be a serial killer.”

“Do I look like a serial killer?” Jacob extended his hands out to either side.

I didn’t answer that, looking both ways on the deserted college streets.

“Fine. But I’ll be a safe, possibly but probably not, a serial killer. Promise. No funny business.”

I wasn’t sure if that last part was entirely true.

I worried my bottom lip with my teeth. “I shouldn’t.”

“But do you want to?” he asked.

For the first time, I had an answer to what felt like a very important question.

Chapter

Four

JACOB

My heart plummeted and started right back up as if she was the only thing keeping it beating. I saw her.

Or rather, scented her, but saw her sounded much more romantic. And I would be romantic for her if I could, even if Silas and Leeson told me it was unlikely, I had a single romantic bone in my body after I brought home girl after girl our first year at Velnova University.

It wasn’t my best moment, but it had been a growing experience.

Now, none of those other girls and no one else mattered. Because I was standing in front of this one. Not only that, but I was standing in front of what was no doubt, one hundred percent my omega.

My scent match.
