Jacob.

We were laughing, I think last night. Or maybe just talking.

That was nice too.

Only clearly, I didn’t make it home.

Walking outside of the bedroom, I listened for any sort of noise. I heard the distant hum of a shower or television was likely coming from somewhere, but I kept my steps soft and even. Next door to the bedroom I was in, I paused.

This scent, not just the one I had been lying in for hours, hit me hard enough that I needed to reach out and grip the molding to hold me upright.

My lungs felt like they were shaking with the scent of butterscotch with notes of brown sugar and honey. I needed to find where the smell was coming from, or more likely now that this has happened not once, not twice, but three times—who?

The entire apartment smelled like I’d moved into an iconic bakery.

Swallowing, I took another step. I forced myself to walk away from the most delicious scent I ever smelled in my entire life. I wanted to cry. But I couldn’t. Right now, I needed to get out of here, call Shelby to pick me up, and get back to… whatever it was that I planned to do this weekend.

Get back in my sad omega fort of blankets that I was pretty sure wouldn’t smell as good as the soft sheets I had just been in?

I shook my head.Eyes on the prize.

A new, gentle sound of clanging made me pause again. This was it. I wasn’t going to be able to get out of here without anyone noticing. Especially not when someone else was up and moving into this place with me.

Was it the guy whose bed I was just in?

Behind the counter, a large man in the kitchen paused what he was doing. He was halfway to bringing down a mug from the cabinet. Only, suddenly, that didn’t seem to matter anymore to him.

“Hey…” His eyes widened. Warm, brown eyes. Warm brown eyes complete with the scent of apple pie made me want to sob and scream all at once after he ran into me on the campus quad the other day. “You’re that girl I ran over the other day.”

Leeson.

Somehow, I never forgot the quickly hushed name as he ran away from me.

My jaw dropped. It seriously dropped like you read in stories and you wonder, how in the world does someone’s jaw just drop?

Like this. Apparently.

I must’ve said his name out loud because slowly he nodded. He looked down towards the hall before coming back to me. “Were you just with?—”

Oh god.

“No,” I said quickly. “No. I wasn’t with anyone.”

“Oh-kay,” he cocked his head like he didn’t quite believe me. “Are you sure about that?”

“Yes.”

Biting his plump bottom lip, the man who still managed to shock me with just how tall and broad he could be at once, the alpha, smiled— Leeson smiled.

Why was I even still standing there? I took a step to the left and then to the right. For an apartment, there were quite a few closed doors, and I wasn’t sure which way would lead me far, far away from here.

One of those doors shut with a snap against the wall and the guy I recognized from last night who was with me appeared. Jacob.

Jacob, who saved me.

Jacob, who got me a milkshake and French fries.

Jacob was supposed to drive me home and I guess he did. It just wasn’tmyhome.
